I am the blunt out spoken one that kinda says it like it is. So pardon if i step on toes or make ya pissed off.
My advice is simple and to the point make and appointment with surgeon you have chosen..AND ASK him/her why is coumadin stopping you from having WLS... I know this much  after surgery we have to take luvox( spelling oops) for anti clogging...So maybe thats the reason you are being denied...
Plus if I am not mistaken...coumadin also has the protential of messing up your muscles. My deceased sister in law took it for years and that was one of the many side affects...
Linda, I dont know who your surgeon is but maybe it might make sense if you call another WL surgeon.....
And if they say the same thing then... no matter what you do you will be denied..
And maybe I am crazy but I would not  tell a doctor about my meds etc...that could put your health in great risk...
I do believe that by not mentioning or deleting something could make the odds of  a successful surgery against you...

being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

My husband's pre op exams found that he needed triple bypass surgery at 39 years of age!!  He had his open heart surgery in October and had his gastric bypass in January.  He was on coumadin during those months and still takes a small dose of it.  He went to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital.  Dr. Randolph saved his life and Dr. Ghani now manages his care.  I am so greatful for the pre-testing that is required!  I thank God for it.  I would be a widow had they not done all the pre-testing.  We were married just over 2 years when all this happened.

We were very afraid that my hubby wouldn't ever get healthy enough to get the weight loss surgery and we felt that was surely a death sentence for him.  We prayed a lot and did what the doctors suggested.  He was the model patient during his recovery from open heart surgery and that along with God's healing touch allowed him to have his gastric bypass so quickly.

I know it's awful to think that your day will never come, just follow doctor's advice and see what the new heart specialist says.  There has to be something that you can do that will improve your situation if that is what is required.  Don't give up!  Never, ever give up!  It is SO WORTH IT!!!

In my time on these boards there have been so many of us who think our day will never come and it comes...there are a few still waiting and hopeful and I am sure they can encourage you...

Good luck and God bless!

Thats exactly what I will do, he also had the atery in my kneck check for blockage and I pass that test as well.  So I passed the ekg, echo gram and the test for blockage in my kneck,, He said that I would need filter put in before the surgery and when I saw him, he said that he would approve me.  But the surgeon office contacted me and said that in his letter he said, due to this patient taking caumadin, would put me at high risk,.  But, my doctor said, patients that take that drug has surgery all the time, and couldnt believe that he wouldn't approve me,  Generally Im a very healthy individual.  I take coumadin and a high blood pressure pill, thats it.  So, pray for me and wish me well, in trying to get approval.. thanks for taking the time to respond.

Linda, I am using Dr. Katsis too and I know that if you call Crystal and talk to her she will help you find out why you were denied because of coumadin. I don't take coumadin, but I do take a boat load of other meds ( 16 prescriptions) and I went to Dr. Ernest Pickering Jr. He is a cardiologist. He told me that as long as I passed the echo, and ekg he would approve me.  I passed them and he approved me. He is in the Southcrest Medical Plaza.  He is a very nice Dr.  I don't think coumadin is a very good reason to turn you down. Good luck.

Sure you cqan add me as a friend. What do you have left to do? I still have my psych eval to do. It is on November 6th with Dr. Cashman. Crystal told me I should plan on a january surgery because there was 20 people ahead of me. That was about 6 weeks ago. I need to call her and see where I am on the list.

You are cracking me up!  You are too funny!

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me." Erma Bombeck

Linda, I had my 3rd stent put in my heart on January 23 of 08. I have passed an echo, and a stres test with flying colors.I have been ready for my surgery for over a month now.....But...... My cardio doc would not give me clearance until I have been on Plavix for 1 year past my stent date. I was furious! I begged him to just let me off a couple months early because honestly I can't afford the darn medicine and I wanted the surgery now!

Yes, many people have had the surgery and have just gone off the plavix for a couple of weeks and done fine. I have had 3 stents, my doctor knows how my body works and he is the one who knows if it is safe for me to be off the meds for any amount of time. It is also the requirement of the stent makers. The criteria of this stent calls for the patient to be on Plavix for one year! This doctor has saved my life 3 times. I trust him and will do what he says because I know that he has my best interest in mind as well as his own butt to cover.
Sure you can go to many doctors, here or in Mexico to get the answer you want, but doing so may actually risk your life. You need to sit down with him and ask him why the restrictions and ask him under what cir****tances whould he ok it. To go to doctors and withhold information is totally crazy!! You could die on the table! Do not risk your life just to get the surgery. Once they explain to you the reasons, then you can judge if you should find a doctor who will allow the surgery under certain cir****tances with the medicine. Yes, being overweight can kill you, but so can certain risks on the table! I am repeating this because it is so important!! Do not withhold infromation concerning your heart from ANY doctor! It could be a deadly choice!
