Discouraged!

I had surgery on Monday. I was on the liquid diet for a week prior to surgery and lost 5lbs. I am on the liquid diet now but somehow I have gained almost 10 pounds! How is this possible? I'm hoping this is normal. I read all these posts of people who have lost weight during the liquid stage and that has me worried. I am not drinking anything with sugar, I'm using sugar free jello, sugar free carnation instant breakfast, and water (and starving by the way). Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, Shelly. This is absolutely normal. It's all the air they pump in you, and it's the anesthesia, and it's some water weight, probably. I've read post after post about this. You shouldn't weigh for a few weeks, maybe not until your first post-op checkup. Okay? Plus, your loss will be more of a surprise then. Be encouraged. You're doing just fine. The weight WILL come off.
Blessings,
Mary

I have suggestions...

Calm thyself....seriously... you're healing and probably retaining what your body needs to heal itself.

Time is your friend...the longer you wai and follow the right things to eat, the more success you're gonna have.

This band thingy is new for you...your body is adjusting but it doesn't understand the rigors of a schedule or why it's changed so suddenly.

Before you know it, you're gonna be losing so much weight and not understanding why you can't find a size that will fit you for more than 2 weeks!  So you're gonna be just fine...  plus hey...you've got all of us to ***** at if things don't go your way....we're here to listen...and ***** back of course...hehe....

This too shall pass.  It's jus****er weight from having surgery.  STAY OFF THE SCALES.  Measure your success by whether or not you're doing what they tell you to.  Also on the hunger, up your water.  You should be sipping constantly to get enough in.  Take care and keep your chin up !

Hi, Shelly.
Are you having broth, too? How about hot decaffeinated tea? Most people don't care for the canned broth, and if you can't or don't want to make homemade broth, take just the seasoning packet from Ramen Noodle Soup, make broth from that, and strain it really well. I bet that will taste good to you and be more filling. Try to mix things up, so you don't get so bored with the liquids. Hang in there. You'll be on 'mushies' soon.
Blessings,
Mary

Shelly, STAY OFF THE SCALE-preferably until you go back for a check up.  I didn't weigh for 2 months (my first fill visit) after my surgery.  The world didn't come crashing to an end, I had lost a little bit 20 pounds I think of weight and during that two months I had 2 vacations and flew several times, so I am sure it was all over the place, up down, up down, and I just made the decision to follow the rules and not go crazy about 2 pounds either way.

I truly truly believe in my case, and probably in the case of others-being fixated on a number on the scale is part of what contributed to my weight problem in the first place.  Also, I personally know people who were never fixated on the scale prior to WLS who are now-so take this opportunity to set yourself free from that problem-toss that scale out.

For full liquids, I'd do protein drinks, milk, soy milk,-remember, you can add milk to soups or unflavored protein powder to soup.  I'm a advocate of a balanced diet, but during the liquid stage it is really hard to get protein in, so I focus on that.

I also really enjoyed (and still do) miso soup and egg drop soup-they are one of those non creamy soups that are still very filling.  I just get some from a restaurant and filter out the solids.  Good stuff!

Mushies are a pure joy after the liquid phase-when does that start for you?

Thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes I think the lack of food has made my head crazy! I get to start on mushies on Monday, so not much longer.

Try to get some more protein into you-then you'll feel better-same with the mushies.  Mushy is a texture, not a food group-and protein is better than ice cream (in the long run)...

I know I do need to get more protein in. That has been my biggest problem. I've been so nauseous that I can't hardly force many things down. I have had to use phenegran just to keep liuid down. The doctor's office says the nausea usually passes in about a week. I sure hope so because I am feeling pretty weak.

Sometimes a too empty stomach can cause nausea too.  If it's approved on your plan, try a vanilla Boost....I can usually get part of one of those down (and keep it down no matter how icky I feel).  Also-drink it room temp.  Really cold stuff can be painful on new operated on tummies-room temp or warm is best.
