Hey:  question is when are  we  allowed as
RNY gastric  patients to drink  real COFFEE
with caffeine  in  it????
I cannot stand the decaf and have not had coffe

The proper response here is to ask your nutritionist.  The new little tummy is very susceptible to caustic agents like caffeine so....  I think I waited over a year to try caffeine but I know there are different protocols now at WeightWise.

This is information that may be in your tools given to you by your surgical practice for review.  This close out I would definitely refrain from any acid or caustic agents just to ensure adequate healing of your pouch.

I think  your'e   correct   so no coffee  yet.
I have not had any  except  decaf  and I threw it  out.
YUCK!!!  But i am having so much anxiety  fro this surgery and not eating  sweets  for  it  like I always did- that the caffeine  may  send me over  the loop.
So I will be  good and  not  do caffeine.....  next  yr  I will!!!

Well, I will let a RNY patient give you the official answer...but, I started drinking regular coffee after my two week post-op liquid stage - my nutritionist said it was ok, but not to abuse it. I was always pretty much a one cup of coffee a day person, so that is how it remained after surgery. Also, caffeine is somewhat of a diuretic and if you do drink caffeine (tea or coffee) you need to make sure you are drinking your 64 oz of non caffeinated beverage daily, in addition to coffee, otherwise, it dehydrates you. I drink 96 oz of water a day, so that is not an issue for me.

I would honestly check with your nutritionist, and follow her recommandation...

At my 2 week post op at Weight Wise, Chris, the nut giving the class, said after the 2 week liquid phase, we could have regular coffee, but in moderation.  I was SO happy, because I hate decaf too.  I mean, what's the point?  So, instead of drinking most of the pot, I drink like a cup, or maybe a cup and a half.  I also don't make it quite as strong as I used to.  I mainly drink water the rest of the day, and once in a while tea, but I am keeping the tea decaf.  I figure the coffee is enough.  You need to follow your nut and doctor's orders though.

Ask your surgeon or dietician to be sure. Each program is different. My surgeon's program says no caffeine ... ever. So they each have different protocols or rules.
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly
