New member question - bypass or sleeve? advice?
Hello! I personally chose the RNY. I had many co-morbities and the track record for the diabetes being eliminated after RNY was a big factor for me. I am totally pleased with my results so far. I've lost 144 pounds. 32 pounds lost prior to WLS and the 11 pounds since March 12th. I have more to loose but I will get there. This isn't a race but a lifestyle for me now. It is merely a tool. I still have to choose foods carefully, drink 64+ oz of water, and exercise. I feel like exercising now and that's awesome. Like someone said earlier I'm NOT on a diet and don't have to worry about it!!! It's awesome. I have many friends who chose the sleeve and have done equally as well. You need to research personally, attend a seminar and make the decision with your surgeon. My insurance excluded any kind of WLS so I was a self-pay. Most insurance companies are still viewing the sleeve as "experimental" and if they pay for any procedure most of the time it is RNY since there are many more years of data out there on that procedure. I think the sleeve is going to kick butt though... I would have saved $5,000 if I had chosen that route. Each one is different and the decision is your decision personally. Good luck!!
When I am all done I want to lose 135- 150 pounds. I am at about 60% of extra weight lost at this point. I had the sleeve. Both surgeries are excellent tools. The effectiveness is determined in part by your dedication to following the eating plan given to you by your nutritionist and doctor. It is possible to out eat all of the surgeries. Good luck making your decision.
Something that helped me with my decision was there is no malabsorption with the sleeve where there is with the RNY. I had a feeling in the future it might be important for me to be able to take medications if necessary. The other thing I heard reference to was whether or not you have a desire for sweets. RNY would be the answer for you then, because at first you will dump if you eat sugars which should train you to stay away from them (unless you're Ruth).
I kept going back and forth between RNY and the sleeve. I liked the idea of no malabsorption with the sleeve but also the documented and well established history of the RNY. Dr Walton told me he preferred RNY especially in people who are sweet eaters and I was more of a slaty/crunchy eater. My final decision to have the sleeve was after attending several support group meetings. Seeing so many successful sleevers with fewer complications was the decision maker for me.

I debated for quite some time between the sleeve and RNY. RNY seemed to me to be the "safe - tried and true" route and the sleeve seemed to be more cutting edge and untested (and scary!). In the end, I chose the sleeve because of the malabsorption issue with RNY. I can tell you that I have lost 100% of my excess weight in just under 6 months with the sleeve. I can't tell you which would work best for you, but I can tell you for my situation and lifestyle, the sleeve has been a WONDERFUL tool.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice... I certainly appreciate it and after doing more and more research yesterday/today, it looks like I'm going with the sleeve ^^ At this point I have to lose 16lbs in order to have the surgery in december (I started in september). If anyone has any tips, I'm interested : ) Thanks again.
