New member question - bypass or sleeve? advice?

Hello everyone... I'm new, and I haven't really posted on a forum for 8years+, so I'll try to keep this short and sweet : )

I've reached the point that I've decided on wls and am 90% leaning towards the sleeve, however I am very worried about paying all this money and not losing the weight as well as I might with the bypass... I checked around and I got lots of percentages: 80% of "excess" weight loss with bypass, and then lots of conflicting numbers with the sleeve (30%, 60%, etc).

Can anyone tell me the correct percentage of excess weight usually lost with the sleeve? To those of you who have had the sleeve, does it seem like you're not losing that much or is the weight loss comparable to bypass?  I need to lose about 140lbs and am so concerned that the sleeve might not help me get there... to those of you who have had the bypass, how effectively have you been able to reach your goal/s?

Any information/advice is greatly appreciated.

I have a band, but I'm chiming in anyway.  There is a number out there to support just about every point of view, and they are blasted around some of the other forums all the time.  I would suggest that you talk with several people who have had both surgeries and get an idea for what a typical day is like for them and see which one fits into your life better.

You will have to make changes with any surgery, figure out what those changes are, and what changes you can be most successful at.

Beware of anyone who tries too hard to sway you one way or the other-they are really trying to prove something to themselves, not to you.

The thing that is hard to factor in is how all the surgeries change things mentally.  I thought that giving up cokes was going to be the hardest thing ever, and it never really phased me.

Finding the right surgery is kind of like finding a mate....find the one that has the most behaviors that you can comply with...LOL.

Well, I am 4 years plus post-op from the RNY Gastric Bypass...  I have been super satisfied with the results of my surgery, as I have lost over 160 lbs, several medications and co-morbidities, also I have had 2 beautiful babies that I couldn't have before my surgery.  I think each individual has to do a lot of research and make the decision that way.  No one can make the decision for you, that's for sure.  Definitely research several surgeons and attend seminars, as well.  If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to message me.  Best luck!

Hi - I had the sleeve and so far lost 61% of excess weight, I still have about 90 lbs to go to make to a goal that I chose and that seemed reasonable to me.

I believe any WL procedure can be successful, because the success will be based on your abilitity to change eating habits and the level of committment you make to get where you want to be. Regardless of the procedure, you will need to make good choices when it comes to food and exercise.  What the surgery has done for me is that it is making me feel normal while achieving these goals - by that I mean that I don't feel as if I am on a drastic diet trying to lose weight, because the small quantities that I eat are satisfying and hunger is no longer part of my daily life.

My strongest suggestion is that you attend a seminar if you have not done so already and get an in-depth comparison between the surgeries and maybe that will aid you in making a decision.

Best of luck!

My sister and I had the RNY, both of my parents had the sleeve.  In many respects, they are similar; the foods you eat are the same, there is a pill regimen you'll follow for the rest of your life, and the weight loss happens quickly.  None of us had bad reactions to the surgery and were back on our feet relatively quickly.  I chose RNY because it had a proven track record for both weight loss and diabetes, and the sleeve hadn't been used long enough to have long term results available.  My dad chose the sleeve; his diabetes (which was worse than mine) has subsided and he's lost a tremendous amount of weight in only a few months.  Of course, your milage may vary.  Bottom line:  go with what you're comfortable with.  Best wishes, whatever you choose!

Dang, that will be a fascinating follow up study just in your family.  You could be your own science project.

Wow,  I can't help but picturing your family dinner get together.  One TV dinner thrown in the middle of the table for everyone to serve from.  lol.  Sorry, just had to put that image in writing.  That is great for all of you and what a great group of support you have so close to home.

Thanksgiving's sure going to be weird this year.  I picture us all hovering over a cornish game hen or something.

First of all, welcome.  No one can make this decision for you.  You have to do the research yourself and do what you personally will feel comfortable with.  Personally, I had the RNY, but was also considering the sleeve.  My surgeon advised the RNY, because I was in such poor health, had over 200 lbs. to lose, and he wanted me to get the weight off faster.  I followed his advice, and have been very happy with it.  Congratulations on your decision in taking your first step in being a healthier you.  Good luck, Michael.
