sleep study

I went for my sleep study Friday night.
I got the results from my PCP today.  I have mild sleep apnea.  He said he doesn't feel that I will need a machine since I am going to have surgery soon.  I talked to Dr. Gorospe tonight to see what he thought.  He said it was up to the Pulmologist?
Does anyone have any idea if I will have to have a machine or not?
My results were stopped breathing 7x's an hr and woke up or was moving 25x's an hour.  I'm assuming that's mild????
I had no Idea that I had apnea.  I thought I just had trouble sleeping.  I guess now I know why!
Thanks for your input!
Kim

I was also diagnosed with mild sleep apnea pre-op at my sleep study.  I was required to get a CPAP.  They checked the smart card in my CPAP 3 months post-op and I'm still using the machine 55% of the time so I'm still hooked up.  I would love to get rid of it but will do whatever is necessary to stay healthy!

On the up side, I did feel much better once I got my machine.  I just felt more oxygenated which sounds dumb but true.

Good luck to you whatever happens!

OH no!! I was so in hopes that you didn't have it!  Well one glad thing is that you have plenty of hoses and masks!! LOL!!!  Ok, it's not funny, I know, but I had to say it!  I am praying you won't have to have it, but if it will make you more safe, then I'd sure use it.
I am doing better on my machine. I wake up easier in the mornings and I think sleeping better.  I'm just having horrible trouble with my blood sugars going up into the 300 - 400's in the afternoon...though I'm on a very low carb meal plan.
When will you find out if you will have to have a machine or not??

Sherry,
I was hoping I didn't have it either.  I was REALLY SHOCKED when she said I had it.  I had no clue.  When I went in for my sleep study the doc there went over everything with me and I was well informed on it.  I really like the way they explained it to me.  I understand why I feel the way I do sometimes.  Ex...I feel like my head is in a cloud somedays or fog.  Like I can't think clearly, I get irratible, I don't sleep well, and haven't for a while, I snore, I crave sweets really bad...those are all just a few symptoms.

I will know if I need one when I begin my testing.  I don't know how to go about getting one.  I guess the person who says I need one will tell me how to get one.  I have insurance so it shouldn't cost a lot right????  I sure hope not!

I'm still planning on dontating the masks and hoses I have to our cause!  I may use one of each if I HAVE to but otherwise they are all going for a good cause, and its not me!  LOL!

Thanks
TTYL!
Kim

Kim, if you've already got the machine, I say use it.  You are going to feel much better and clear headed.  It's not like you walk around with a big old sign on your head that says CPAP user.....LOL.

Just a question, y'all--Have you seen anyone post that they did NOT get some sort of sleep apnea diagnosis? Sometimes I wonder if it's all just a money-making thing. Normally, I'm not such a suspicious person, but come on...
I'm not saying your diagnosis is false, Kim. I just thought of the question, so this seemed like the time and place to post it. Not that anyone can answer it, even, but still...
I have no idea what the sleep apnea "list" is, but the times you mentioned that you'd stopped breathing and your movements would seem more moderate than mild, to me. However, I don't know anything about sleep apnea than I have it, supposedly, and I use my CPAP faithfully but can't seem to sleep long with it on, before I wake up from extreme dry mouth. Yuck!  I'm trying a mouthwash called "Biotene" tonight. Prays, "Please, Lord, make it work."
Blessings,
Mary

Well, I do know that when I had my last stent put in, the doctor would not put me out because with sedation, I totally stop breathing and they have to work to get me to breath again. I am considered to have severe apnea. Of course I didn't think i had it at all.  I often wondered if it were a gimmick too until I had to do the stent under a local because of the apnea. I have actually had the surgery to fix it where they take out your uvula and tonsils....It didn't work. NEVER have that surgery!!! It is from hell!!!

I do find it odd that nearly everyone has it, but we are also a society of heavy people now and that impact's it.
About the dry mouth....do you have a humidifier on it? That seems to help with the dry mouth thing. When they gave me the autopap to get the readings I didn't use the humidifier on the one they let me use.....I didn't want to do something to it. When I used the one Denise let me use I did use distilled water and my mouth did not get dry like that....The one Donna, EdtheCat gave me has a humidifier too and again, I don't get that desert dry throat.
Oh and by the way....I'm up at 5:30 thinking I should go walk and that never happened before the cpap, so it must help. Now if my blood sugar would just calm down!!!

Hi, Sher.
I do know there are many people who do, indeed, have sleep apnea, and, you're right, it would stand to reason, given our large percentage of overweight people. I also know that medical procedures are a tremendous source of money, and, as such, it would be easy to merely push through a false diagnosis, just for the money.
Another thing that REALLY bothers me is how different amounts are charged, based on insurance or no insurance, and from place to place. For example, I could have gotten my sleep study done at Wt. Wise for $600. Naive me, I thought the price would be the same anywhere, so I had mine done here in Winfield. The cost for a one-night sleep study was over $3,000! I have no insurance.
I tried the Biotene mouthwash and, in the night, the spray, and it seemed to help some. It wears off after 2 hours, so the spray helped then. My machine does have a humidifier, but it's cold mist and I think that may be part of the problem. There's no adjusting in temperature or "pressure" for the humidifier. I do have distilled water in it. Anyway, I did sleep more last night, so I'm happy about that. I think part of the problem is that I just wake up a lot...sometimes every hour.
I've been that way ever since I was raped at 15. I've done so much work, psychologically and spiritually, with that issue that it surprises me that I still have sleep issues. I believe that it will resolve, one day. As silly as it may sound, I believe that when Dr. Walton removes much of my stomach, much of my pain from the past will be removed. It's how I've envisioned the surgery, anyway.
Did you go for a walk? It's raining here, so I don't know if I'll be able to go swimming later (I have to be careful or I tend to fall).
Have a blessed day,
Mary

Mary,
I agree with you that it seems like everyone has been diagnosed with it.  But after the dr explaining to me what it was I can understand it.  There are only about 10-15% of women that continue to have it after weight loss.  Its cured when the soft tissue in the back of the throat isn't as engoraged from the extra weight.  She really explained it well for me and I really understand more about it now.  Although I don't WANT to use a machine I might sleep better if I at least try it.  Who knows!
I'm really sorry for everything you have had to go through.  I'm sure you have been through counseling and more counseling for your assult.  I think the way you are looking at your WLS as a new beginning is a wonderful thing for you.  That will be one way to put the past behind you.  (I am not a dr.  I just play one on here ok!)  I do hope that you will continue with your theropy before and a after your WLS.  To really work through it and say goodbye to your past.  (I hope that makes sense)  I just don't want you to have unrealistic expectations and be let down if you don't feel the way you hope to. I'm not saying that you won't...I hope and pray that you do.  But as for myself If I expect something to happen one way and it doesn't turn out the way I wanted it too I am really let down.  And this is a life changing event for you.  I want you to have the full benefit of the change!
Goodness, I hope I made sense!  I have a problem saying what I'm thinking!  I think thats just the blond in me!  LOL!
Anyway, when are you having your surgery?
Happy Tuesday!
Talk to you soon!
Kim
