Read all you can.  Follow the preop diet to the letter (no matter what someone else's surgeon had them do-you are paying your surgeon, so follow his direction).

Don't worry too much.

Cut back on carbs/soft drinks etc. BEFORE the preop diet or you'll be very sad for about a week.

Remember, it is surgery, so when you wake up you won't be doing handsprings.  You are going to feel bloated and some discomfort-the bloat lasts a good week, but an open incision would take a lot longer and hurt more than a little gas.

After surgery walk, rest, sip water as much as you can.

Keep track of what you are eating, especially before a visit.  I get hungry after 3 hours means one thing if you are eaten chicken and another thing if you are eating pudding.....and be honest-the doctor can't help you if he doens't know what you are eating.

Be prepared for some strange and wonderful emotions-it is a wild ride.

Hi, Lisa.
I'm pre-op, so advice is VERY limited. However, if you get nervous prior to surgery, just pray and let others surround you in prayer. It's very comforting. You'll be fine. Congratulations on getting your date. It will be here, before you know it.
Blessings,
Mary

Hmm advice...don't take alot of stuff to the hospital
STAY on that pre op diet like your life depends on it cause it does in alot of ways.
Give up the sodas and caffeine based drinks prior to your pre op diet..cut out the sugars potatoes etc....
I was done open instead of lap so when asked to walk WALK. It helps with pain control and you have less chance of blood clots. Do not eat what is brought to you on your tray saying oh the nutritionist here knows what I am suppose to have...MAKE sure you KNOW what you are to have..you are just one patient among a hospital full and they make mistakes...I know from personal experience...sweet peas and turkey with dressing covered with gravy is a no no....
I took meal replacements with me and some protein supplements.
be sure to take travel size bottles of lotion shampoo etc...Norman Regional supplied me with the basics ...All I took was my deodorant and lotion....if you hurt let them know...Don't be a tough cookie and say oh it hurts a little when you feel like you are about to hatch an elephant
Constipation after surgery is normal so be prepared...
And one more thing.....CONGRATULATIONS ON MOVING TO THE LOSERS BENCH!!!!!!

being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

Congratulations Lisa.  Isn't it a real high when you have been pre-op for what seems like an eternity and then all of a sudden, you have a date.  It's going to be great.  Michael.

Congrats Lisa!!  I'd like to invite you to walk with us at Regency Park in MWC.  We won't be walking this Saturday but most Saturdays we meet at 8:30 and do 2 miles.  We'll walk to your pace and you can go the length you want to and work up to it.  I had to.  We also go to Panera and have coffee afterwards and solve all the world's problems!!!  (LOL)  We'd love to have you join us when you can.  I've made some really awesome friends in our OH group and wouldn't trade them for anything.  We all know and understand each other and what we're going through and that helps a lot.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

Advice?  Well, I'm not a bandster, but my best advice is to listen to your surgeon.  They do know what is best.  If you are still drinking sodas, give them up.  The sooner you do it, the easier it is.  Other than that, I look forward to seeing you on the loser's bench~ You'll be there very soon!

Lisa, I agree with the others, do what Dr. Gornichec says.  The pre-op diet may see difficult, but is so worth it when you get to your surgery day and they can do the op cause you followed instructions.  I didn't have difficulty giving up carbonated drinks because for years I have not allowed myself to have one until I have had all my water for the day!  Read the pre-op diet instructions on docs website and get stocked up, make sure you have some variety so you don't get bored.  The NUT will give you some great info on what you can have and if you need suggestions don't hesistate to ask.
I am only 6 days post op so I don't know it all, but I sure remember how exciting it is to get your date!!
God Bless you, keep us updated!!
