Stuck? May be acid

Hi, Everyone.
My good friend had VSG surgery in early July. She just went through something very interesting. She had eaten some of a salad made from iceberg lettuce, and, afterward, she felt it was stuck in her throat. It was very annoying. She knew nothing was actually stuck, because she could swallow food just fine. It was when she drank anything (hot or cold) that she felt it.
She called her surgeon and he said she probably did have a small piece of lettuce there, but that it would loosen and go away, eventually.
That was WEEKS ago, so she went to her doctor, who sent her to an ear/nose/throat specialist. He numbed her and took a scope through her nose. There was nothing stuck, but she did have a lot of inflamation, which, according to him, was due to stomach acid.
She'd never thought of that, as she's had issues with acid reflux in the past but nothing of late. She was on Protonix (I think) post-surgery, but she stopped taking it, after a month and a half or so.
So...I just wanted to share that not taking something for acid may cause the "stuck" feeling. Maybe this will help someone.
Blessings,
Mary

Thanks Mary.  I stayed on my medication for acid reflux for about 3-4 months.  I no longer take it and don't need it either.  I for one couldn't eat lettuce early on at all.  I pretty much concentrated on protein and cooked veggies and fruits.  I have tried salad the last couple of months and still can only eat a small amount.  Salad is hard to digest even with a "regular" stomach so I'm sure with my small pouch it really gets a test.

Yes, when she first told me, I said, "Girl, I don't think you're supposed to be eating salad yet, especially iceberg lettuce." She agreed. She'd had zero problems, so she felt like she was home free. Bless her heart. Live and learn, I guess.
I'm glad that you don't have to be on medication, anymore. That's a blessing, I'm sure.
Have a great day.
Mary

Yes, it is a blessing.  I am off of several medications including insulin!!!  I still have problems now and then with things I eat especially if I "forget" to chew and chew and chew or eat too fast.  I had a bout last night with hamburger....doesn't work well for me for some reason.  If I make meatloaf or meatballs with it I do fine but if I grill the meat into patties....I just can't handle it at all right now.  I thought I'd try last night for dinner but no....the pouch still doesn't like it and I don't like the after affects!!!  Everyday is an experience.  One day something is ok and the next day not so much!!!

Ok, Mz Know it All is going to speak on an issue here.... I never realized....I take 2 aciphex a day (the max dose) for acid reflux or Gerd.....Well this last Jan. I went to my Gastro Doc. who does research for gastro issues. I got  an Endoscopy. He discovered that most of my reflux is not acid. It is bile. None of the protonix's help with bile, only acid. It can errode your esophagus just like acid. Not having a gall bladder, I am having excess bile dumped into my stomach and of course with my weight issues it pushes the bile up. Also I have some neuropathy in my stomach so it doesn't empty right away. I now take 1/4 T. of a certain childs antibiotic to make my stomach empty right and get the bile to move.....Soooooo be on alert to the fact that not all indigestion is acid. If you are taking the antiacid medications and still have it....it could be bile. This doctor is well known across the country for his research. He also gave me a cure for my dumping syndrome.....Being on Diabetec meds caused awful problems with that.....I have not had that since he told me about it.....about 3 years!
I am hoping that after the surgery and after I lose some of this excess weight, I will also get rid of this reflux of the bile... Man! At times I feel like a kid waiting until Christmas!! Its so far away though.....I'm being patient but it is so hard to read all these wonderful posts of weight loss...I'm happy...but in a way jealous!!Oh well in the meantime I am walking Greyce every morning and working on my preop weight loss!! I am going to be there!!
Now people are saying....well if you have lost this weight.....why can't you just keep it up and not do the surgery??? I hate that!!! Anyone else get that one??

I, too, have a stomach that takes forever to empty. I had the GI series some years ago, but I don't remember the doctor deciding to do anything for me, as it didn't seem to bother me. I've been wondering about it lately, though, wondering if that will be a big problem, post-VSG. Thanks for the information, that it could be bile, not acid. There's so much to learn! I'm amazed at how doctors and nurses can retain so much and decide what's going on and what to do about it.
Yes, I do hear, "Why not just keep dieting, because, after all, you've lost 33 lbs. on this." I just tell them that while dieting may be successful, it's almost always short-term. Statistics show that 96% gain back what they lost and more. I doubt I'd be in the 4%, to keep it off. At least, that hasn't happened in the past (altho' the recent past has been much better).
Blessings,
Mary

Oh yes I got that.  Some I worked with told me that.  I told them that people can do about anything "short" term.  It's the long haul that gets us and then we regain.....  If it were that easy we'd all be thin and not have to worry about WLS now wouldn't be???  DUH
