Hair Loss
Hi.
From what I've read, almost everyone experiences some thinning and loss of hair. What I am noticing, though, is that those who get in at least 40 grams of protein per day see less of hair loss and faster hair growth. Hope this helps.
I'm having VSG surgery (probably in November), and I have fairly long, thick hair, so it's a concern of mine, too. However, it's a minor inconvenience, as compared to staying overweight.
Blessings,
Mary

I am 4 1/2 months out and have little if any hair loss. I started Biotin 5000mcg each day about a month pre-op. I have no idea if it is helping or not. I also started using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner at about 2 months post-op. Again, I have no idea if it is helping but I have not experienced any real hair loss.
I make sure to keep my protein intake as high as possible usually at least 50- 60 grams. Some days it is as high as 80- 90 grams of protein. I also take all of my vitamins.

First - and most importantly - Yes - it will be a temporary condition. Some people seem to lose hair when undergoing a general anesthetic, no matter what the procedure. Combining that with the drastic reduction in protein, calories, and fats over the first few weeks post-op from WLS, and your body will look anywhere it can to find the nutrients it needs - and hair growth is something your body will consider as "non-essential." Due to the way our hair grows, you won't necessarily notice it for 3-6 months after the insult... but just keep in mind - it will come back.
Personally, I am 5 months out from surgery, have been taking my Biotin daily and thought I was doing well with not losing my hair until this weekend... Out of the blue, my M-I-L said, "Is it the diet that's causing your hair to thin?" OMG - well, I guess now that I look, maybe it is thinning some, but it's still well worth it , and I know it will come back over time.

I have experienced considerable hair loss. Mine didn't start until about 4-5 months out but I can say that it has for the most part stopped. I took all my vitamins, biotin and ate lots of protein and lost it anyway. I see the new hair growth and what hair that didn't fall out was beginning to look like straw and very very dry. I had natural curly hair and it is now straight as a straw. I'm hoping that my texture and curls return soon and I was told and have read that it will. All in all that is the only problem I have had with my WLS and would so do it again in a New York minute..... Good luck!!
