Cold Brew Coffee Update

I tried it with some Starbucks Sulawasi which is a pretty bold coffee.

This is what I did:  Course ground a grinder full of the coffee. (Just a cheap Mr. Coffee from La Target-so maybe about 3/4 of a cup.)  This is normally a little too much for my 4 cup coffee maker.

Then, after trying various homemade filters I realized, DUH, the coffee grounds has to sit in the water-so I just dumped it in a big mason jar with some filtered water and let the whole mess sit for a few hours.

Using a plastic pitcher and a tea strainer, I strained out the big grounds which really didn't take that long at all-a few swishes (remember I don't cook and I'm not patient with kitchen stuff so if I say it is easy, it is).

But, it was still cloudy, so I thought for a minute, put a strainer in the coffee pot and poured the coffee directly in to the coffee basket (no heat, not using the water reservoir).  With no coffee in the basket, it took about two seconds, and two filters and I had nice clear coffee.  Into the fridge for the night.

This morning I mixed it  1/4 coffee, 3/4 water, left it cold and added some matrix vanilla.  Best protein drink I've ever had.

I just made a cup of coffee alone-no sweetner, foo foo or dairy products, and it is the smoothest coffee I ever had.  I made it with warm water, but it woulfd be great iced too.

Honestly, I'm not going to spend the 30 bucks for a cold brew system-cause my mason jar works just fine and I don't have a ton of counter space.  Oh, you can spend 7.00 for a tea strainer or go to Target and pick up a stainless steel sink trap for 99 cents.  I have both, and I no longer know which is which.  (ps, I have one for a sink strainer that I use just for that, and one for coffee/tea I didn't want you to think I was brewing coffee in my sink trap).

I am NOT a coffee drinker, so I can't tell you which coffee is the smoothest. I was however a manager of a coffee shop. (Go figure...a manager who doesn't drink it) We had the beans roasted locally, though we got them from different countries. We NEVER put the flavored oils on the beans until just before grinding as the oils that make those wonderful flavors, can go rancid. It is always better to grind the flavored oils into it at the time of purchase, and then store in the fridge.  Our best seller was the beans from Costa Maya. Everyone who bought it said that it was a very flavorfull cup of coffee and very smooth. I think a person can search all day for a perfect cup, but the key is the freshness of the roasting. When I worked at the coffee shop
I only knew what people bought the most.  All in all it is the freshness of the beans.

At the coffee shop, we made plenty of the new iced coffee's (7 years ago) lol We made coffee, set a pot aside to cool, When people ordered it, we did a shot of the vanilla syrup...sugar free or reg, or any other flavor. It was a ratio of 1/2 coffee and 1/2 cream. Some people wanted ony 1/3 c. cream because they wanted more coffee flavor....It sold to quick to really get stronger in the pot.

I HAVE been drinking a cup of cool water with instant coffee, adding my vanilla protein to it which is 26 g. of Protein, a 1/2 t. vanilla for a more vanilla taste, and the rest is Braums skim milk.(about 1/3 c.) that is alot of protein in a  big cup of coffee!!  Not only that, it is also very good!  I put it on ice sometimes too.  I say that, but realize I wouldn't really know a good cup of coffee if I got it.....I only know what I'll drink or what I like. It gives me energy and I'm ok with that!

I don't put flavor in it till it hits the cup.....I like the cool coffee for the morning protein drink-hot coffee and protein just don't work well together at all.
