A LITTLE WORRY!
MY SON IS 15 AND THE OTHER DAY WHILE HE WAS SITTING IN CLASS HIS HEART STARTING BEATING REALLY FAST AND HE GO SHORT OF BREATH. I PICKED HIM UP AND TOOK HIM TO THE ER IN TALIHINA AND THEY DID BLOOD WORK AND EKG ON HIM AND FOUND NOTHING. SO THE ER DOC TOLD ME TO TAKE HIM TO THE INDIAN CLINIC HERE IN MCALESTER TO GET HIM A HEART MONITOR SO HE COULD BE MONITORED FOR 48 HRS. WELL HE PLAYS FOOTBALL(STARTING ON OFFENSE) AND DOESN'T THINK HIS TEAM CAN DO WITHOUT HIM. ER DOC SAYS HE CAN CONTINUE PRACTICE AND GAME PLAY BUT IF HE HAS ANOTHER EPISODE TO SIT OUT. SO I GET HIM IN TO SEE PEDIATRICIAN THE NEXT DAY AND OF COURSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE HEART MONITORS HERE BUT IN TALIHINA. THEY DID 2 MORE EKG'S ON HIM AND STILL FOUND NOTHING ABNORMAL.SO THEY FOUND HIM A MONITOR IN TALIHINA AND WERE HOLDING IT FOR US. MEANWHILE PEDIATRICIAN TELLS HIM NO ON PRACTICE AND GAME PLAY. SO I TAKE HIM BACK TO SCHOOL BECAUSE HE HAS A TEST THAT I DON'T WANT HIM TO MISS AND THEN PICK HIM BACK UP AND MAKE THE TRIP TO TALIHINA FOR THE MONITOR. THE DOC THERE TELLS HIM TO WEAR THE MONITOR EXCEPT DURING PRACTICE WHICH HE CAN GO TO AND TO DOCUMENT EVERY TIME THAT HIS HEART RACES. WE GOT A DR'S RELEASE SAYING THAT HE COULD PRACTICE AND PLAY IN HIS GAME ON MONDAY BUT NOW THE COACH SAYS THEY WOULD RATHER HIM NOT BECAUSE HIS HEALTH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GAME. HE IS SO UPSET BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE A BACKUP FOR HIS POSITION. NOW HE HAS LOST HIS DR'S RELEASE BUT THE COACH HAS TOLD HIM THAT IF I COME AND TALK TO HIM AND HE HAS THE RELEASE THEY MIGHT LET HIM PLAY ON MONDAY. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART AND THAT IT IS JUST BEATING A LITTLE FASTER THAN HE IS USED TO. ON THE FIRST EKG HIS HEART RATE WAS 59 WHERE NORMAL LOW IS 60. SO I AM ASKING FOR PRAYERS THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIS HEART. WE TAKE HIM AND THE MONITOR BACK TO TALIHINA ON WEDNESDAY AND I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED. THANKS
Will be praying for him and thinking of you all. When people are active and in good physical shape it is not unusual for their heartrate to be in the 50's. At 15 he is probably not drinking coffee, but what about sodas or energy drinks? Those contain lots of caffeine and might be the culprit. Just a suggestion, I am sure the doctors asked all those questions about excessive caffeine or diet changes.
Let us know how he is doing.

I'm praying for your son. It's good that everyone wants to be so careful with his health. If everything checks out okay, after the monitoring, it may be anxiety/panic attack, as that can mimic a racing heart, etc. Definitely cut out all caffeine, as it is a trigger for panic attacks and isn't good, otherwise.
I assume EMS will be at the game. Some schools now have portable heart paddles (don't know the correct term), for on-the-field use. That's not to scare you, Mom. You just might want to check, to make sure EMS will be on-site.
Please keep us posted.
Blessings,
Mary

First, let me say this....You sound like a wonderful mother. I hear such concern and love for your son...You may say to yourself...Well duh!! Well, many mother's would have brushed this off and said we will wait and see if it happens again. You are smart to have jumped on this right away!
Next! Congratulations on your 15 yr old having that position on the team!! He must be a talented young man! He also sounds like a responsible person to be so concerned about his team! I admire that.
I truely doubt anything is wrong, but be sure to have them also check his thyroid levels. Just as one more thing to rule out. Nothing serious, but that too can cause heart rate variations. Each of my 4 children have had thyroid issues. They get that from me!! Anyway you might want to rule that out.
It could have been a slight panic attack without knowing the cause...You are taking all the right precautions!
I will pray peace for you and your son....and discernment for the doctors. They will get to the bottom of it...You may have to jump through a few hoops, but I am praying for answers!
Remember in teenagers, things can happen one time in their lives and never again..He is blessed to have a great mom who is being safe with this!!
