Question about Pre op weight loss

I have noticed that alot of members have lost significant weight before the surgery. Was this a requirement of your surgeon? Has any one used Dr Katsis and do you know if he requires this? I have a very hard time losing weight and never seem to be able to keep it off.  If I have to lose weight before I can have surgery then I need to start trying now as it will take me 2 or 3 months to lose 5 pounds.  I am on a low carb diet because of my diabetes and metabolic syndrome, but I haven't lost any weight on it. The only thing that has happened are my blood sugars are now in an acceptable range.  What did you do to lose the weight? Any suggestions for me?

For me, Dr. Walton required losing 10% body weight, which was 37 lbs.  It's to shrink the liver, allowing for greater access during surgery and to have you be in the best condition for the surgery. It seemed impossible, at the time, but I have just 9 lbs. more to lose.
Blessings,
Mary

I had a high BMI, something like 52 so I was required to lose 28 pounds before surgery.  I also carry a lot of weight in my belly so that can be a problem with laproscopic surgery.  I started on 3/14/08 and had surgery on 5/28/08.  I lost 34 pounds before surgery.  I was really, really motivated to get this done once I made the decision.

They want you to lose weight for a variety of reasons.  The biggest is that they want you to shrink your liver  Most obese patients have a fatty liver and they want you to shrink it for better visibility for the surgeon.  They also want your body to start in a losing mode so it will be less of a shock right after surgery.  And, in my opinion, it gives you time to get your mind and spirit in order.  Looking back, I know I needed the time to get my attitude in order and know that I was commited to this whole process.  We still have to make good choices about nutrition and exercise after surgery.

Good luck to you!

My first thought was...If I could lose the weight I wouldn't be sitting in this doctors office!!!!
I have no clue why some people have to lose more than others....but I know most doctors will have you lose some wt. to give them room to work inside your body. I don't know what their charts are on this...I had a friend who weighed in at 325 and had t lose 5lbs....I am to lose 22 lbs before my surgrey date....As of today I have 5 more to go with 3 1/2 months to go....I am going to lose all I can before my date....People have said that if I am doing so well losing some weight why do I need the surgery. My answer is my diabetes is still out of control and my heart risks are high...I don't want this to come back, so I will still do this no matter what. A girl on here....Lakegirl, I think it is, weighed in at 220 and only had to lose 5 lbs....
I do know that I look like a baked potato on two sticks, so all my weight is stuck in my belly area....My docter wanted more room to get around. So I am working on it. He knows what he needs me to do...and I am going to do it without becoming defeated.
Here is the deal. YOU CAN do it, I am like you....a slow loser. Being diabetic does not help matters. If you are on insulin then it is even worse... BUT it can be done.  am doing it though I said the same thing you did....I can't!   A low carb diet for me, did nothing....My A1 was over 10 and still is....Now, I am making sure I am eating 3 meals and 3 snacks a day but I am doing alot of protein. My snacks are all protein....My meals consist of protein and complex carbs. I cut out all bread, rice, pasta and soda.  The problem with low carb diets is that we still have our breads, rice and pasta's....A diabetic diet is not enough to lose the weight. That allows 35 carbs per meal and 15 for snacks.....I know that doesn't work....If you cut your snacks to nothing but protein and a veggie and change up the meals...YOU will lose!!! I didn't believe it either, but it does work!!
The nutritionist will give you a plan too....If you want this, you WILL do it because you know it wont come back after this...that is worth the sacrafice!!!   Sherry

I have cut out all breads, pastas, rice, soda and crackers.  I have been doing this for over 2 months now and have only lost 3 pounds. I am on insulin. I take 4 shots a day.  I started out on the south beach diet as my pcp suggested I should do, but it was still too high in carbs. I *do* want it. I want the surgery soo much. I am just having a hard time losing and don't know what to do. Now, i am having an Atkins Advantage shake for breakfast and lunch and protein for dinner. I have cut my calories by over half and am walking every day and I sill don't lose weight. It is very frustrating and I cry because I don't have success.  My body is so so messed up or something.  It isn't because I don't want it....I do and have been very diligent in trying to lose weight. I don't know what else to do.

I had Dr. Gorspe at Bailey's and he did not require any weight loss.  I was just told not to gain before surgery.

I have been able to lose in the past but never been able to keep it off.  It was not easy...I had to militant but I wanted the surgery so bad that I was militant.  If you want it bad enough and your mind is in the game it can be done.  You will have bumps in the road but just stick to what your doctor and nutritionist say and you will meet any goals they give you.  They know what they are doing!  Good luck!

you can do it.. just keep working on it. it may take longer than you want but it will happen.

When I was on my way to having surgery I was doing great at losing. then I found out my financing wasnt going to be there after all, i gave up for awhile. I gained 30 # in about a month. I started back recently on eating healthier, not dieting (i hate that word) and I have lost 14# in 2 weeks. but the doctor upped my water pills again too.. so that may be alot of it..

do you retain water? cause if you do it makes weight loss look slower.

Sherrie, great job on losing those 14 lbs!! That is wonderful!  The word dieting is indeed a bad term in my book....It is a lifestyle change!

Emily, I am not implying this is you....but it WAS me! I skipped meals thinking that would help lose the weight. Some days all I ate was breakfast and then skip lunch, snacks and then eat a weight loss meal for dinner, some had breading, some pasta, some rice......... I might just take a bite of wrong stuff here and there thinking I had been so good what harm would one Graham cracker hurt for a treat at night, especially after not eating much all day.....My body was shutting down and not burning fat to protect itself. I was not feeding my body or my brain, for that matter! I talked to a guy on here...Cowboy, who said...I promise you, that if you go on Atkins...or up the protein and drop the carbs...I could do it. My thoughts were "ÿeah right"....You know what? I decided to try it and the weight did begin to drop....I still ate veggies like green beans or other greens. I am eating more than I have in years because I AM eating. No meal skipping anymore. I drink tons of water too.  I also borrowed a cpap from a friend and again the lbs didn't come back on...they still dropped.  I WAS certain that I COULD NOT DO IT! I convinced myself that I couldn't!
This board told me I could!! People on here encouraged me to believe I could. I am... I also had to quit lying to myself about a bite here and there....It's like eating a banana split and then thinking no one see's it ,so it won't matter.....It does to my body! (Oh but I really don't eat bananá splits!) I used to maybe break down and eat a donut...no wonder my sugar was crazy and I could not lose! For me....one donut makes a difference. It is toxic to my body and my sugar....
I will just say to you...YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Change your mindset, stand firm and know that you CAN do it!! There are sites that help you count the calories you have eaten....there are so many things to offer you on here...but until you believe you can do it ,nothing will make a difference!  We are here for you, but we can only do so much....The rest is in the strong woman you are inside!   Sherry
