Grill Cheese Reinvented

I've been nursing a sickly stomach and wanted some comfort food, but I didn't have any butter/spread or anything that resembled that.....so I made a grilled cheese using walnut oil with some chopped garlic mixed in the oil.  Have to say-it was pretty tasty, browned well and was probably healthier than one made in butter.   If I had had soy cheese, it would have been even healthier, but I had the single serving borden things so that's what I used.  I couldn't fini**** but I think it was more a function of the bread (thin sliced ezekial bread) than anything else.

Thought I'd share in case a flu or cold finds you with no butter/spread or anything that resembles it in the larder.

Out of the freezer at Akins.

I have to confess, not all of the sandwich stayed down-but bread is fickle that way-goes down and then remerges.

I've tried the ezekial bread and it's good.  Then I decided that maybe it was cheating for a sleever and haven't had any more.

I'm impressed that you just happened to have walnut oil in your larder...!

Deb, Sounds yummo. I would almost hurt someone for a grilled cheese sandwich.

What do you do with walnut oil?  I've used sesame oil in salad dressings and Asian food.  Is walnut oil better for you than something else?  As to the grilled cheese sandwich, I've actually put cheese in a small bowl and microwaved it to get it melty and gooey.  You can also use a paper towel to absorb the oil before you eat it.  I love the melted cheese the best.  Sometimes, I put a sliced tomato or pickle between the cheese and bread and it's good also.

I had the walnut oil because I don't care for olive oil all that much, and I was experimenting with healthy oils.  Bread is such a lure for me-but there is no warning-it goes down ok and then reappears-sometimes.  I think I would have been ok with one slice of bread-it's thin.  Two slices exceeds the limit.

I don't know if walnut oil is any healthier than any other oil-it must have omega 3 because walnuts do.  I bet it's a lot healthier than a big old slab of butter though.  I had to throw away some kind of pricey goat butter because I just couldn't stay out of it-it was THAT good.

hmmmm walnut oil.. sounds interesting.. and might be good with a little vinegar on a salad... personally when i make a grilled cheese..(keep in mind i am preop) i use a non stick spray (just spray on bread), sprinkle with garlic powder and brown... not as tasty as butter but its good and takes care of the craving...
