I read in an article that diabetics do not loose most of the weight they are expecting, like those who don't have diabetes, after the gastric bypass surgery.    Any comments???

Well, I had type II and have not taken any meds for it since leaving hosp after surgery.

I am completely in normal ranges now. Lost 105 lbs in 10 mos and will reach my goal weight after loosing another 20. So I would say it worked for me.

I was type II and before I had surgery because I lost some weight I was taken off one of my meds...after surgery all meds were gone even my cpap...
IE: gastric bypass was invented for stomach cancer back in the 1880s and they discovered it helped diabetes and weight loss
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

Thanks Katznyarn and Pattye S for responding.

Katnyarn I hope this works for me too.  I had the lap band but it did not work.  I plan to get a revision done but getting a gastric bypass this time.  I only hope that Dr. Keith will agree to do the surgery.

Pattye S, did your diabetes leave right after surgery or did it take some time to completely be gone?

I was taking Metformin before RNY and stopped after surgery.  My 3 month lab results my insulin was 105 so I had to go back on it.  I have taking 1000mg per day since then.  My doctor is going to re check it because my hands will shake sometimes during the day.  He thinks it might be my insulin levels.

I must say...  I was VERY disappointed that I had to go back on Metformin.

I have lost 117 pounds and lost it quickly.  I still have 40 pounds I would like to loose but I've been stalled for about 3 months now.  GRRR..

I have not had any insulin or other medication for diabetes since the day after surgery.  I was taking 140 units and now NONE.  My AIC 2 months ago was 5.5!!!  I have lost 140 pounds since surgery and am totally expecting to continue.  I think it's up to the individual.  We all  have our part to do as well.  The RNY is simply a tool....not a total quick fix...an amazing tool I might say!!!  I'm also off many other medications as well.  Good luck to you!!

By the way, we have a Midwest City walking group on Saturday mornings at Regional Park.  We meet at 8:30 at the large pavilion and walk about 2 miles.  We'd love for you to join us sometime.  We also go for coffee afterwards.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!
