Hot flashes after eating?

Just over about the past week to 10 days, I've started having a huge hot flash every time I eat. This is totally new. I know it's not hormonal ... ovaries have been out of commission and retired for a few years now. ; )

It seems every time I eat ... even just a couple of unsalted almonds, or a sugar free popsicle .... I get a huge hot flash in about one to 5 minutes after eating. I'm not eating fatty food or sugar .... just regular food. It even happens with a healthy salad or scrambled eggbeaters.

This doesn't happen with drinking. It doesn't happen after drinking a protein drink, or decaf tea, or any other drink. It's only happening when I eat.

I'm chewing really well and not rushing, at least I think I'm good on both these fronts.

Has anybody else experienced this? If so, did it pass?

It isn't terrible, just annoying and makes me need to sit down for several minutes.

I'm thinking it's a vagus nerve stimulation symptom. I'm also hoping it dissappears as mysteriously as it started. I'm calling the doctor's office and dietician tomorrow if it continues throughout today.

Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

Thanks Thomas! You are a true jewel. Your reply to Marylaw really touched my heart!

I'll try some soup and see what happens. And, it's good to know that the hurricanes aren't causing you harm ... and that your internet service is all good!; )

Shelly, have they made any adjustments in your lupus meds?  I have no idea if that could cause your issue or not.

It could be hormonal.  I don't even have ovaries any more and began having the hot flashes 2 weeks post-op.  My lab work came back indicating that I was low across the board on the hormones.  My new doc is still working on finding the magic recipe to get them under control.  However my flashes are not food related.

Let us know what you find out from the doctor.
I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

Thanks, Denise, for you input. No recent med changes, so I seem to be OK there ... at least I think so. Maybe I need a change? I'll call tomorrow and check with them, too.

If my ovaries are trying to come out of retirement, I'm really going to be upset! It's not fair to go through menopause TWICE! ; ) I hope your doctor gets the perfect recipe figured out for you soon.

It's really odd when this happens. I get weak, very HOT, my face turns red and I get clammy/sweaty. No palpitations. It seems almost like what many describe when they have dumping ... although I don't have diarrhea or racing heart or severe nausea. It happens with anything solid ... even just 2 almonds or a salad with just a tiny amount of fat free, sugar free dressing. I thought it would pass, or maybe I had a bug, but it's hanging on and only happens right after I eat. I'll call in the morning and let everyone know what I find out.

Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

I've had a couple of experiences lately, and finally put two and two together-for ME, it's liquid sugar (like ice cream or a smoothy) that is commercially prepared (I don't use real sugar at home).  Apparently, in liquid form I can get enough sugar in in a short time to cause me to dump....so no more liquid sugar for me. (which is a DUH, I don't need it anyway, but I don't want to be ill from a treat if I want to have a treat).

Yours is a bit more perplexing.  I know after I've thrown up for any reason, it takes a day or two to get swallowing down again.  I'm leaning toward the vagus nerve idea too.  Wish I was more help, but am curious as to what you find out.

I'm clueless here, too. Maybe I've lost enough weight to make things closer together in there??? Ha Ha! (just a joke)

The only thing I can imagine is that there's some kind of vagus stimulation happening from swallowing or maybe my tube tummy getting something solid-like in it? It is really an effective deterrent to wanting to eat. It's working like aversion therapy!

I'll call OWLO first. If they advise, I'll call my rheumatologist, too. I'll let you know what I find out. I'm hoping it is just a strange bug going around.

 Hi, Shelley,
Wish I had words of wisdom for you but I've started having the "power surges" and it's no fun.  Super strength anti-perspirant can't prevent all the sweat I've got.  Anyway, good luck.  donna

Thanks Donna.

I'm thinking maybe I should have had Dr. Nelson pluck out my withered ovaries while she was in there working! ; )

I had an abd. hyst. years ago, but my ovaries are still in residence ... although they retired a few years back. I imagine they're about the size of a grape nuts now. If my VSG is making them spring back to life, I'm not gonna be thrilled! ; )

Well, fat has estrogen in it too-and it doesn't seem to release in steady bursts.  I get weird hormonal things right now, either hot flashes or horney flashes and I've come to realize that my body just doesn't know what to do with the surplus estrogen.

I haven't discussed this with Dr. Nelson....LOL.
