I think I figured something out...  I can't drink plain water.  It makes my throat feel like it is closing up.  It makes my pouch hurt.  Makes me feel like i have to belch but can't.

I did some research on OH and found this:

QUOTE:
Now the water-thing is a bit more common.  Will find plenty of people who say that their body is most fussy about plain water.  Making it tea, or adding a splash of juice, or Crystal Light seems to change the water structure a bit making it an easier go.

This seems to be the case with me.  Anyone else ever have this problem?  This is the weirdest thing...  You know, sometimes I just feel like PLAIN water.  I get tired of stuff mixed in my water.....

I think that will change the further out you get.  when I first was post-op I could not stand plain water.  EVERYTHING I drank had to have flavor.  I still like my flavor mind you but i can drink plain water now.  It used to feel weird to me but I never really thought about it until you just mentioned it.

I had some trouble initially with having difficulty drinking comfortably. My problem was swallowing air when I drank. It took me a while to figure out my problem. I called the nutritionist and my surgeon and got the OK to use a straw. That solved my problem ... no more air, no more burping, no more feeling that something was not going down or that it was going to come back up. I still use straws and much prefer them now.

My surgeon was *against* any straw use. I called and got her approval and I am the exception to the rule about straws causing air to be swallowed .... for me it's just the opposite.

It might be that a straw might help you, too .... BUT, DON'T DO IT without your surgeon's knowledge and approval of what you're doing first.

Too late.  I've already used a straw.  I've always been a straw user, so I think that maybe I would do better with a straw.

I have VERY sensitive teeth and that is why I use a straw.  I broke one of my front teeth years ago and have had dental work done on it 3 or 4 times to restore it.  The last work I had done was probably 2 years ago and I ended up having to get a crown on one tooth and a vaneer on another and I guess that is why my teeth are so sensitive.  I even have to use a certain kind of toothbrush or it irritates my tooth!

So...  I've already used a straw.  I don't specifically remember the doc or anyone at WW telling me not to use a straw...

Other WW patients, correct me if I'm wrong.....

Well, have you tried drinking without a straw? Many surgeons feel straws cause air to be swallowed and cause problems with getting fluids down. Try drinking without a straw and see if that helps you. You may be one of the many that straws cause a problem with your swallowing.

Yes, lately I have not been using a straw.  When the plain water bothers me it is usually out of a bottle.  Maybe that is my problem?  But, I drink Crystal Light out of a bottle and it isn't a problem?

We do tell our patients not to use a straw, however we have had patients that do much better with one, and that's okay.

I can't drink plain water early in the morning! It make my stomach cringe and often get nauseated from it. Have no clue why, and I am over six months out. So, my first 32 oz of the day has to be mixed with Crystal Light (I usually get the Wal Mart Brand water flavorings). The rest of the day I do ok with plain water......

Dot, put on your big girl panties and get your liquids any way you can.  Liquids are one of those non negotiable things that don't have to taste just right-our bodies need a lot of liquid to process all the weight we are losing.  Without adequate liquids, the kidney's begin to suffer.  So, drink whatever goes down (that doesn't have a lot of calories in it)
