Surgery Postponed
Okay for those wondering what an IVC filter is....
An IVC filter is another one of the ways, along with the Lovenox shots and leg massagers, to help prevent blood clots. From the way it was explained to me, folks whose BMI is very high (60+) are more likely to get one. What it does is it helps prevent any blood clots that are formed in the legs from reaching the heart or lungs. This is accomplished by the "unbrella frame" design of the IVC filter. The filter is injected into the patient in the neck, normally on the right side, in the carotid artery. The filter is then fed through the arterial system down to the groin area and "deployed" in the femoral artery of the right leg. The sheath is pulled off the outside of the filter causing it to open like an umbrella and hooks itself into the inner sides of the artery and hold itself in place. some filters (depending on brand) are equiped with a small loop at the top so that the filter can later be removed once the pateient has lost a signifigant amount of weight from the surgery. The ones Dr. Gorospe uses (through Dr.Pascal) can later be removed but as Dr.Gorospe said "would you remove the oil filter in your car?"
Hope that covers it. I tried to type that out in my own words without getting TOO technical.
