Leg Cramps

I had surgery on August 13th and every few days it seems like my calves want to cramp all the time. I know this is probably lack of potassium but how are you supposed to get enough when you are on liquids and even then when you go to soft food there isn't that much potassium in those foods. Any one else ever have this issue??

Are you drinking enough liquid?  It's probably a potassium thing and I have the same problem sometimes.  I am not on liquids so I just have a banana.  But in your case, I'm not sure what to tell you.  You're close to mushies.  Seems like my nutritionist suggested something like low sodium bouillion?  Does that have potassium?  I would contact your nutritionist for sure!  Those cramps are very uncomfortable and usually happen in the middle of the night.

Good luck!

If I remember my college bio correctly, sodium causes muscles to contract and potassium causes them to relax. So if your sodium intake is elevated then you'd be more prone to muscle cramps I would think. So the low-sodium bouillion would make sense if that were true. Good luck!

Jen, Welcome to Oklahoma OH. Are you taking your multi vitamin twice a day? If the leg cramps persists you need to contact Weight Wise. Best of luck, Rita

I was told to drink one packet of the bouillion from the WW marketplace once a day to help with electrolytes. One sip of that nasty stuff was all I could take!

I have suffered from leg cramps since my surgery.  They're not constant (every day), but they are persistent.  I even fell and sprained my MCL 2 weeks ago because of a leg cramp that buckled my knees.  I take my vitamins daily, but have found that making sure I'm getting AT LEAST 64 oz of liquid every day and eating the peel of a baked potatoe about once per week has really helped.  I used to eat a banana for this, but was told that bananas are picked while they are so green that it cuts down the potassium content and that the peel of a potatoe and beets have much more.  I've tried them both and they do seem to help.  BTW~ I feed my DH the inside of the potatoe....I'm not eating it (even though it looks & smells really good sometimes).

Hope this helps, I know you're on liquids right now so this info may not help for a couple of weeks.

Good luck & keep us posted.
