Numb legs...does anyone else experience this?

When I go out walking either outdoors or let say walking around the Wal-Mart I get this sort of numbing tingling feeling in my shins.  I have only started getting this in the last month or so and today its really bugging me.  My mind going 99 to nothing is telling me something might be wrong.  my legs, especially my lower half of my legs have always been very tight and super strong with no extra baggage.  I am worried if maybe this is a sign that I am losing protein in my legs or something or if its just that my legs are getting stronger now that I am walking more.  Has anyone else been experiencing this feeling?  I will say this, it dont feel like that burning pain you normally get after a good hard walk or run.  That is a burn I am used to from my younger days.  This is more of a numb sensation.  Hope someone can help.

Dan, is it possible that your shoes are worn out?  I know I make sure to replace my walking shoes at least every 6 months.  And, you probably need to get your foot measured.  After losing more than 100 pounds you almost certainly don't wear the same size. After 6 months the padding and rubber in shoes begins breaking down rapidly and no longer offers the foot much in the way of protection and support.

Does the numbness go away when you sit down?  If it goes away I wouldn't freak out too much.  I would be looking for the mechanical issues such as shoes, gait, pace, or posture.

Both pairs of my shoes are new.  One pair is about 6 months old and the other pair I just bought 5 days ago.  I have not lost any length in my foot yet but I can tell that I have to tie them a little tighter since surgery, so I probably lost some thickness.  The numbness is right in the middle of the shins and bothers me moreso in the left leg than in the right.

Does the numbness go away when you quit walking? Or, is it an all the time thing?

That's kinda weird.  Could it be shin splints?  Although I think that is painful and not numb feeling.  Have you googled it?

Hmmm, interesting.  Have you increased your mileage a lot lately?  Maybe you need to back off a bit for a few days and see if things calm down.  If they don't calm down you might need to see your PCP.
I am assuming you have no back pain?  The reason I asked if the pain went away after you sat down was because a numb lower leg was my first warning sign of a herniated disk in my lumbar spine.  I don't want to freak you out- that was just my experience and the numbness was not related to exercise.

Are you taking your vitamins?  How much B12 are you taking?  I remember reading something about tingling and numbness will start in your legs when your not getting the B12, but you seem to early out for that to be happening yet.

Dan, I would call your Doc and get this checked out asap. Numbness in your extremities is never anything that you want to mess around with.Best of luck to you and let me know what you find out.

Dan, I had/have the same sensation since before my surgery (when I started exercising).  I called my NUT and she told me to make sure I'm getting all my liquid and protein AND to increase my iron if they persisted.  I started eating beets and it helped some, but she's considering putting me on a supplement.  I'll find out about that and let you know.

In the meantime, do contact your doctor...like Rita said, numbness in the extremities is never something to take lightly.

Good luck!
