Do they stay in forever or are they eventually taken out? This is freaking me out more than the thought of having my insides rerouted...

Take a deep breath.  I had the filter put in and it does stay in forever.  I think you can have one put in and removed but the one Dr. Gorospe puts in is usually of the permant nature.  They went through my neck not the groin area and it really was not that big a deal.  I had it done that morning and went back to work that afternoon for a few hours.  The procedure really was not bad at all.You are awake, but you really do not feel a thing.

I giggled a little bit during mine and they told me to be still.  I said well it tickles ya'll.  They go in through the carotid artery and work it down through the body to the femoral artery where it is then deployed and will stay.  Your neck will feel stiff for a couple of days afterwards but like Sherri said it really dont hurt at all.  If you have any more questions hun feel free to ask

What in the world? What is a IVC filter? My Surgen never mentioned anything like that....is it common in all RNY patients?

Some doctors use them and some don't.  It just depends on the surgical practice and the conditions surrounding the particular patients.  I am not sure if there have been many done at WeightWise but I am sure if the docs felt it was necessary they would do it with no hesitation.  Not standard protocol there however.

If Dr Warnock didn't mention it, no worries chica!!

Well Dr. Pascual who put mine in at Bailey said it used to be that people would leave them in forever, however, now they are saying you SHOULD have them removed after you lose all your weight.  They say the removal procedure is just as quick as the insertion procedure.  And the procedure was a CAKE walk compared to the ABG blood gas test....OUCH!!  I'll take the filter any day over that...Hope this helps!

Ooh are you referring to them drawning blood from your radial artery in your wrist?  If so yeah I was "that guy".  The one that it took 1 nurse, two respiratory therapists, an anathesiologist, 3 deadening shots, and an ultrasound machine to FINALLY find my artery since it was so deep.  That hurt like HELL.  I still have people at the hospital stop me and say "were you that guy that they had such a hard time finding?"  Like I said I am notorious at Bailey now...lol
