Skinnies who don't understand

Why is it that just because right now i'm over weight that all the "skinnies" get to have an opinion about how i should go about getting my weight off. Perhaps it's because they don't understand what it feels like to be trapped inside a body that is carrying around more EXTRA weight then most of them even weigh just by them selves...or perhaps it's because they've never had to be embarressed to ask the store clerk if they make that blouse in a bigger size, or had to pretend that they didn't notice the dirty looks or giggles around them as they stand in line at the food court in the mall. Maybe it's because they have never had to worry they might collaps from being out of breath because they walked a flight of stairs...whatever the reason I wish they would keep their skinny mouths shut to me about the "dangers and risks associated with WLS" and how it's the "easy" way out and how if I REALLY REALY wanted to I could loose weight on my own without surgery. It's these people that really  make me so mad I could spit nails. Have you guys had issues with Skinnies at work or home, or anywhere spouting too many un asked for opinions? How did you handle it?? Cause right now I'd like to kick something.

I am sorry people are being ugly to you about WLS.  There is so much misinformation out there.  Take a deep breath!  You know you have made an informed medical decision in your best interest.  Just smile and thank them for their concern and then blow them off!  Eventually they will leave you alone.
I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

I totally have been where you are, girl!  When I was wanting and waiting to have my WLS, every "skinny" friend I knew had an opinion about it and most of their opinions were quite unwanted.  I still remember the looks at the mall food court and the embarrassment of having to go back and get a bigger size and the limited stores I could actually shop in.  I hated hearing how the surgery was the "easy way out".  Believe me, it's NOT the easy way out.  It's a total lifestyle change that I'm still living and adjusting over 4 years later.  Vent away all you want, cuz you're entitled to it.  *hugs*  If you ever need to talk, I'm here for ya.

The skinniest woman at work, who is always dieting, was the one who had the worst reaction to my news of surgery and tried to talk me out of it. Everyone else was very supportive. After surgery she finally admitted she was jealous that I was losing weight and she couldn't. Whatever!

I had a brain warp of sorts after surgery-because I finally FINALLY got it-that no one who has ever had to lose 100 pounds or more has ANY idea what it's like.  Yes, there are some things in common, but the size of the task is alone is different.

So one day, I was getting yet another lecture from someone who has had an ongoing battle with 5-10 pounds for LIFE (she emphasizes) and I said "You really don't know what you are talking about........"  I let her sputter around for a bit and then I said "it's a little bit like saying you drive a car so you can fly a plane too-can YOU fly a plane?"

It's also a bit like saying I've walked a mile, therefore I can walk 100.  Well, that's true, you can-but tell me it's the same thing AFTER you finish the 100 mile walk.

My other brain fart was the realization it is not being disrespectful to tell these people that they don't understand-because most of them honestly believe that they do...the one's that get it soon realize how disrespectful that is.  The ones that don't get it-well, I tried....

my favorite is the skinny friends that say.. "oh will you diet with me so I can take this extra weight off" what the heck! yeah let me help the skinny get skinnier while I get fatter! Or those that say they want to help but where the heck are they when its time to go to the gym? your not helping me if you just want to talk about diet! i actually hate the word diet. its depressing and makes me hungry. tell me i am on a diet and I will eat ya out of house and home.
Oh here is a good one.. I was at reasors and buying my usual weekly groc, salad and fixings.. lots of veggies and fruit.. the little cashier looks at my stuff and says.. "Are we going on a diet?"  I told her "no i got fat eating 50 lbs of salad a day" she shut up after that! lol...

ok i am done ranting..

What a Bit**!  Who the hell does she think she is commenting on your grocery selection.  Congratulations on not leaping over the register and strangling her!

OMG! I can't believe she said that! I know there are rude and insensitive people out there, but really!! That takes a lot of nerve! I think you handled it very well, better than I would have!

I wish I could give you some great little one-liner to tell the skinnies.  But you are right!  They really don't get it!  Anyone who says wls is the easy way out truly shows their ignorance.  My sleeve gives me a invaluable tool but it is still me making all the right food choices, exercising and paying the dang surgery bill.

I have not run in to this response from anyone.  Maybe they're just scared as to what I would say because I would not stand for it.  I'm pretty open and strong in my opinions.  You need to be strong in your decision too.  Keep researching.  The more you know about your surgery the more secure you will feel when people disagree.

Glad you came here to vent!
