Yay Deb, I'm glad you're coming.  We need your particular brand of wit in our group!  We took a moment and appreciated how funny you are at the dinner last night.

Any chance you could give me a rundown on animal inventory?  Got cats?

Ok, but remember, you asked:

Currently I have 2 gerbils (they live in the garage).  Big Daddy and Offspring

1 ancient cat from Grad School-Pasht (she lives wherever she pleases)

1 African Gray Parrot  Oliver  He's about 8, I've had him since March.  He hates it when the dogs aren't here-they keep him amused.

1 Green Tree Python (who hasn't turned green yet) GloWorm

Ball pythons:(they'll all top out at around 5 feet or so)

2 clowns (a type of ball python) Lucy and Ethel

1 pinstripe (another type)  Godfather

1 pastel (yet another type) Domino

2  Half Dwarf Burmese Pythons-Frieda and Diego (tiny babies born this summer) I doubt Frieda is going to make 6 feet, she's just tiny.  Diego may go to 12 (or he may go full on big and ignore his dwarf half)  These haven't been worked with long enough for there to be any real consistency-but that's part of the allure-no one really knows

Coming Soon:

A Pair of Sumatran Short Tail Pythons (Some people call them Blood Pythons but that sounds stupid to me, because these guys are black.....)

He is a couple of years old, has a dark body and a peach colored head-I can't wait to get him here, get him aclimated, and start taking pictures.  She's really really dark.  A friend of mine was working with them, but got hooked on Albinos and Lattes (color phases) and wanted to focus.  I clearly don't focus, but I am a good home-so he's sending them to me.  I've worked with ST Pythons before, but never an adult, so this should be interesting. (He might go 6-7 feet, she could go 8 or so)

A rule of thumb is that any snake over 10 feet for should not be handled alone-so I try to keep mine under that.  It's sort of a guideline, not a rule-but I'm not that tall-so 10 feet is a good max for me.  My Bette was probably a touch over that-she was longer than my small bathroom but she was special (turned out to be a boy).

Dogs-I've lost a couple of the older ones this year so the population has shifted without growing.

Greta-Rescued Chihuahua Pug Mix-she has a bad hip-I had it fixed, but she still limps.  She was badly beaten and pretty agressive when I got her, but now she feels safe and she's a great pet.

Cody-Long Coat Brindle Chihuahua-I bought him to do agility-he's a little large for a male chi, but it didn't work out because he absolutely hates the car.  It's taken a couple of years to be able to take him to the vet without puking-an agility trial just wouldn't work.

Prissy-Short coat small chihuahua (about 3.5 pounds) She was a present to my Mom when I got Cody-but Mom spoiled her rotten and sent her to live with me.  She's a big pain in the tush but I love her.

Lily-Short coat blue merle chihuahua that I bought do agility.  Turns out she's deaf.  I have a credit with the breeder and Lily does well in the group situation because the other dogs can be her ears. Lily was born via C section after her mother died, so there's a good chance she's a bit "slow" too, but we love her.

Oliver-chihuahua/dauschund/schnauzer mix-he was dying when I got him-badly wormy, anemic and stomach issues....but I got him through it and he's a great dog.  As he's grown, it's become apparent the he's the only really able bodied dog in the house-so I got him a buddy

Moon-border collie pup.  Oliver and I have been spending time at the river and in the woods, and Ollie wouldn't scare a flea (he's just too good natured for words) so guard duties will have to fall on Moon-much later down the road though.

My parents live 1 house down-so they (had better) claim 3 and I would claim 3 if we are ever questioned.  I doubt we would be-most of my dogs are tiny, no one is outside when I'm gone and I pick up poop so the backyard stays clean.  Everyone is current on vaccinations, etc. (My vt loves me to death)

I haven't seen Scarlett-a corn snake that lived under the house-but I did find some shed skin, so I think she's still around.  Carolyn Slowksky, the turtle, was released (thanks S).  Our baby starling didn't make it and the horney toads I got last summer for the front yard all got stepped on by UPS and mail people  (sheesh people, look DOWN).

Wow!  What a collection.  I would probably be like you with the animals if I wasn't married.  Hubby restricts the pet population!

The snakes sound kinda cool but I have a question.  What do you fee them?  Do you feed them sweet, little, adorable, live mice???  I would never be able to do that.  I would have to find some Purina snake chow or something!

Nope, I feed them dead mice and rats-live food can hurt the snake.   Keeping snakes forces you to come to terms with the whole cycle of life thing....although some people I know feed them chicken parts...which isn't good for the snake, and honestly, why does the chicken have less right to life than a mouse?  To me, that's bizarre thinking.

I bet the UPS guy cracked up today-I got two boxes-one a box of sugar free syrups/sauces and another box labeled "frozen rodents".

That is so funny!  Ick on the forzen rodents though.  Not sure I could "serve" those for dinner.

How often do the snakes have to eat?  Every day or not?  I guess they drink water?

They need water available all the time.  The babies eat about once a week-then it moves out to 10 days or so.  Adults eat about twice a month it varies from species to species.  AND-there is not a BM for every item-some snakes only poo once a month or so and for the most part, it's an easy pickup-just a nice compact little bundle.

Yes, snake poo is a very important health indicator just like for the rest of us.  Like birds, they do not pee-they exrete urates, which is like a white turd.  That's why really messy cages annoy the snot out of me-if there is more than one poo in there it's literally been months since it was cleaned.

On the messy spectrum of pets-snakes are one of the cleanest, birds one of the messiest (hence I only have one bird....)

One awesome bird that gets off on dishwasher noises!  LOL!

Love the snake info!

He's in the kitchen now-with an extra snake tub in the middle of the puppy pen and some water and young einstein toys...and in a little bit I'm going to load and run the dishwasher again.  Bliss awaits!
