My surgery almost got postponed!!!!!

I think I forgot to tell you all that my surgery almost got postponed the morning that I was in pre-op!

They said my Potassium at my pre-op visit (July 31) was too HIGH!!!

They took more blood the morning of my surgery to check it again to see if it had gone down or not.  If it hadn't gond down, they were not going to do the surgery!

Luckily, it only took about 20 minutes to get the results and it was good, so I finally got the surgery!

That was close!  We are all so different.  My potassium was low at my pre-op appointment was I was warned that I needed to supplement with my diet so it wouldn't be low the morning of surgery.  They said the anesthesiologist would not be happy if it was low.

Anyway, glad it worked out for both of us.  I hope you are feeling great today.  The liquid stage will be over before you know it so hang in there!

I think this liquid stage is going to be the longest 2 weeks of my life!

I'm making myself some chicken broth right now for dinner.  I'm a little afraid of it though because the other two times I had beef or chicken broth I got the hiccups after and they are painful!

I think I just need to focus on taking it in slower!  Like, eating it with a spoon instead of sipping from the cup.

True, we are all so different - my potassium was also low on my pre-op appt and I had to take a supplement, plus I ate a banana every day until surgery day.

On the broth, yes, use a spoon...that is how I did it and it went down ok - I was only able to drink a few tbsps...somehow it just seemed to be so filling, way more than just drinking water, so using a spoons helps control how much of it goes down.

Whew that was a close one!  I'm glad it didn't get post poned and that your surgery went uneventful.  I'm glad you are on the bench now.  Just go slow with the broth and you will be just fine!  Congratulations Dot!

I'm glad your surgery wasn't postponed.  My surgery was postponed because the hospital didn't have an instrument needed and I was devastated!!!  I was supposed to have surgery last Aug. 20 and I actually got to the hospital admitting desk and they told me to call the surgeon's office.  I was so upset---I felt like they didn't care enough about me and my surgery to make sure the instrument was available.  They finally located the instrument and my surgery was on Aug.31 which was a Friday.  I've heard that Friday isn't a good day to have surgery because the regular staff is off on the weekend.  Of course my surgeon was off for the weekend and his back-up checked up on me on Saturday and Sunday.

Anyway, the whole incident really affected me psychologically.  Also, I have a job and September is an extremely busy month so I wanted to be back at work early in September.

Oh yeah, that would have made me mad enough to spit!  It is one thing if it is the patient's fault (gained weight) or something they can't control very well (high potassium), but for THEM to not have their ducks in a row?  That would be maddening!

Glad you finally got it though!

Oh, I don't EVEN want to hear about a postponement!  There is a guy on the men's forum that was all prep'd and about to be wheeled into surgery, and the surgeon stopped it because he realized there was no cardiology report in his file.  He got the appt with the cardiologist and had the surgery 2 weeks later.  Glad you still had your surgery and it being successful.  Congrats, Michael.
