Help, please

I need help.  I went to the doctor today and found out I have osteoarthritus.  That's why I have so much trouble walking and kind of gimp around.  Anyway, I can only walk in the pool for exercise for at least 6 weeks for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or however long I can handle it daily.  I have my diabetes under control by decreasing carbs and increasing protein but I'm not losing weight fast enough.  Anyway, would it be okay if I post my daily in-take/exercise on this site for a week or so?  If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate them.  Thanks.  donna

Donna, check with the Arthritis Foundation or the Jim Thorpe Rehab Center at Integris SW....they have a great pool and water aerobics program-the heated, therapudic pool is heaven for achy muscles and joints.

Wanted to add a little that I just looked up (being a nursing student I am SO interested in medical research).

Applying local heat before and cold packs after exercise can help relieve pain and inflammation. Swimming is particularly suited for patients with osteoarthritis because it allows patients to exercise with minimal impact stress to the joints.

Fish oil supplements have been shown to have some anti-inflammation properties and increasing the dietary fish intake and/or fish oil capsules (omega 3 capsules) can sometimes reduce inflammation of arthritis.

The above were some excepts I found from this URL.  http://www.medicinenet.com/osteoarthritis/article.htm

Donna - don't know much about arthritis in general, but to answer your question about posting your daily progress....please do so!!! Feel free to post - it helps to keep in check with how you are doing!!!

Thats what I do when I need accountability.  When I was struggling with my liquid I would post an accountability thread every day.  I need to keep track of my exercise too so it would help me if you posted about it.  -Amy

Donna, of course you can post anytime you need accountability.  You can also call me if you need to talk.  I also hae osteoarthritis.  I am starting a water aerobics class at Rose in a couple of weeks if you want to join me.  I had been dealing with bursitis in my right hip recently.  Since I scaled back on the treadmill time it feels much better.  I am anxious to get into the water!

I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

Post away!!!!  I know, for myself, I need to kick it back in gear and make better choices at times, AND exercise (I swear that is a 4 letter word in disguise...no, really..I do!)

FYI, the Lighthouse sports complex in OKC also has a therapy pool that is always heated and usually very very quiet. They have classes that target osteoarthritus. Good luck!

Donna, please do post here.  We're always ready to help.  I will tell you that I, too am an osteoarthritis sufferer.  Sometimes the meds that our PCPs prescribe for it really SLOW your ability to lose weight.  My suggestion is that you completely cut ALL carbs (except non-starchy veggies) and increase your non-caloric fluid intake.  Can't wait to hear back from you.  keep the faith!
