I know what Weight Wise says but what do you do?

Now that I am eating a little bit more I am starting to use thedailyplate.com to journal and track my food.  I will have had 470 calories today of which had 35 g protein.  I know weight wise says to focus on eating protein healthy and not worry about hitting a certain mark. Buuuutttttt.....I really want to know what y'all think.  What protein mark do you personally try to hit?  Some have mentioned on the VSG board that they shoot for 50 grams this early out and later try for like 90 or something.  What do y'all do?

I'm an RNY, hopefully I can offer a little help.  I try to shoot for a minimum of 65-70 protein a day.  I use thedailyplate.com as well to track all my foods and I had almost 90 for proteins today.  I get the majority of my proteins from the foods I eat and not from liquids.

Amy - I used thedailyplate.com for a while, then I lost interest...I was not trying to reach a certain protein goal per day, but by eating protein first, as we should, I reached about 60 grams per day. So I figure that is what I am doing now - however, not everyday is the same, as some days I am hungrier than others.  I have never felt that I have needed more protein than that, as I do not feel weak, tired, etc...and my energy level is pretty high. Again, I eat primarily protein, now I am able to eat a couple of tablespoons of veggies with dinner, but I always have the protein first. I rarely have fruit, because the fruits I like I am allergic to, so that was an easy fix.  I also do not journal anymore! - I know, I am a great example!!!! LOL!!!  I think primarily, you need to listen to your body...if you need more protein, you will know!

Oh, don't you start!! Have you been listening to Glitter-pain-in-tush-Gal??  I am going to have to cook up a week of journaling though in the next few days, because I go see Jessica and Dr. B. on the 12th....

Amy,

I have been journalling my food for a couple of weeks at a time and then taking a break. (currently on a break.)

I have been shooting for 75-90 grams of protein a day, but generally ending up closer to 60-65.  I think that is working for me, but I am trying to get it up to try and hang on to as much muscle tissue as I can.

Good luck on the protein safari!

Amy, I've never even attempted to count protein. The only thing that I really keep track of is sugar and carbs. I have just never considered counting the protein as being important because of the fact they tell us not to worry about it as long as you eat your protein first. That's my take on it.

I am one of those anal protein people  (ok, that sounded bad..not anal protein..anal ABOUT protein..geez louise...).  I used to log my intake everyday, in an effort to get in at least 80-100 g of protein.  I still maintain that level of intake  99.9% of the times, with the exception of a very busy family day, esp if we are out and about.

Remember, protein first, regardless of your surgery.  Protein promotes healing, dont forget, so do what ya can to make sure you get as much in as possible, esp early out.

Good luck!
