what food got you through the mushies?

I am gearing up for the mushie stage this Wed and am planning a shopping list.  Please tell me what food went down easy and got you through this stage.  I don't think I have heard of anyone that had a problem with FF refried beans and cheese so I have that on the list.  I'm a bit scared about the scrambled egg.  Just to jog your memory, the mushie stage is cheese (ricota, cottage, cheddar, etc), soft scrambed eggs, low fat milk, canned tuna or chicken with low fat mayo.  The egg face site or maybe it was another one talked about using SF jello with a laughing cow cheese wedge for a salty sweet taste.  Anyway, ideas are welcome.  Thanks! -Amy

Amy - I don't have any brilliant ideas, I am pretty boring when it comes to food variety and I often end up eating the same things over and over. I became very picky with food, since surgery, not to mention the fact that I have a grouchy stomach, especially in the morning. But, all of the above sound good for your first week on mushies. I did not have any problems with any food, even eggs, so I had those, ff refried beans with 1/2 sl cheese melted in...the laughing cow cheese wedges are pretty good - And as you know I did also eat the WW puddings, those have 15 g of protein each. As far as canned tuna, my stomach did not like that....I still eat the majority of this foods now. I have never really got sick with anything, but if the tiny tummy does not appove I will be nauseated for hours. - Anna

Oh yeah, the puddings!  I bought some of those last week.  I am hoping and praying my weird taste buds like this because it will be an awesome way to get protien in.

I always had/ have good luck with string cheese.  I prefer Kraft 2% or Sargentos light.  Kim prefers Frigo.  The tuna was usually pretty good.  I did NOT do well with the chicken thighs (2X's they sat really heavy) when I reached the second stage of muchies.  Tilapia cooked on the Foreman grill always does well. Cottage cheese does well.  If you don't like the flavor mix in a small box of sugar free Jello (dry) with the container of cottage cheese and you get fruit flavored cottage cheese.

Be careful with too much variety at first.  You don't want to confuse the tummy at this point.  Only try one new food a day- 2 at the most.  You will need to really listen to the banana to determine willingness to accept the food and for fullness cues.  One bitr too many and you will feel like you have food up in your esophagus or somewhere else way too high!  Do not forget and drink or tummy will punish you- almost immediately!

Good luck.

Denise

Thanks for the tip on flavored cottage cheese because before my sleeve I hated cottage cheese.  Maybe that will help make it taste good.  I am already planning my Wed menu and I am only going to try 2 foods.  Refried beans with cheese and 2% cheddar cheese stick.  Thursday I think I will try the cottage cheese.  Can you tell I am ready to eat?  LOL!  I still have two more days of liquids and I am already planning my menu!

Amy, cheese has been and is still my best friend since surgery.  It makes everything go down better for me.  So I think the refried beans, string cheese, cottage cheese, and scrambled eggs w/ cheese were the best things I ate.  After I got out of the mushies, I still ate eggs almost every day for the first 6 weeks or so and just added different meats and veggies to them to see how I tolerated them.  And I loved deviled eggs.  Fyi, I am now (temporarily, I hope) sick of eggs!   Diana

I love scrambled eggs and deviled eggs so I am really hoping they agree with me when I get the nerve to try them.

I gotta agree on the string cheese.  I eat Sargetos pepper jack string cheese or I buy it by the block and slice off a few slices to eat with a meal.  I have always been a cheese lover though and the hotter the cheese the better.  I saw some habernero cheese at the grocery store the other night I was thinking about trying.  The first thing I tried when I was on the mushies stage was cottage cheese.  I was only able to eat about 5 bites but man oh man was it the best cottage cheese EVER.  I love to put a lot of fresh ground pepper on it too so it was awesome.  The second food I tried was an egg and it didn't set very well the first time, I got some foamies from it but I think maybe I just ate it a little too fast.  One thing i will say, no matter how much you love hot sauce or picate, don't try it too early.  Wait til your NUT says you can add it into your diet.  I learned that one the hard way, when your little pounchie isn't ready for spice yet, don't be giving it any.

It will be interesting how I do with cottage cheese since I hated it before WLS.  Randy is like you, he puts fresh cracked pepper in it and loves it. I don't like string cheese but they have cheese sticks that are low fat and have about 50 calories so I got those.

ok the first day of mushies i had an episode with the scrambled eggs. i threw them up!!yuck! could eat a little tuna and a little refried beans with cheese. oh yeah and string cheese. i tried scrambeld egg again today and kept it down so i think i may have eaten it too fast! remember not to drink with your meal and wait an hour afterwards. i htink that is the hardest part for me so far. after i eat i feel like i am dying of thirst but i wait the full hour down to the last minute and then swee****er here i come. it is a learning experience. everyone here has told me that some time and i guess i finally understand. good luck!
