The guys are gonna slay me for this one!!! Don't Laugh Too Loud!
I live 3 miles from work but on S. Western...a pretty busy street. I am thinking of getting a Vespa or Moped or electric scooter. Deb C....You seem to know a lot about motorcycles...what about scooters. I am hesitant to ride my bicycle on Western as there are no bike lanes and I don't want to get all sweaty riding!! There are all different kinds of scooters...good for the environment and the pocketbook...I really want one that will at least go 40 miles an hour so I won't get run over for going 20!!! Do you have any thoughts in this area??? And yes, I would take a rider safety class!!!

Ok, My name is Deb. I like to ride things....LOL. I want a scooter too.
I would get a 125 CC and that will take care of all your in town needs. A 50CC would do it, but the 125 is going to give you the accleration you need to get out on Western-a 50 is going to be sluggish. A 250 will give you a short hop on the highway. The thing that unnerves me about riding a bicycle on the street is I have no ability to accelerate to get out of the way-I feel like a target.
Suzuki makes a cruiser style bike that is 250 CC-it looks like a motorcycle, not a scooter and it is waaaaaay cool. I looked at electic scoots cause I thought that was way cool, but they are pretty pricey and they don't have the acceleration.
You can find old 70cc street bikes ever so often that are cool too-but then you have to deal with scraping up parts, etc-I'm not mechanically inclined so I want something I can take to any shop for service.
I've also seen highway capable scoots-with the step through style-they are pretty pricey too.
If cost is the factor-I'd go with a small street bike, if style is a factor, a scoot and a matching helmet with an adorable "trunk" on the back.
Let me know if you want to go shopping. I have no shame about going into a cycle shop and talking about girlie aspects too-the color, what helmet would look best, etc. Heck, I asked a guy at home depot which color of wrecking bar would look better, blue or red......
