Gastric Bypass & Diabetes

NBC News did a piece the other day about Dr. Leonard Maffucci, of New Rochelle, NY, who is doing a research study of normal weight people who have diabetes. He's basically doing a duodenal switch with out the weight loss portion to see if it will have the same results with normal people as it does with obese patients. Just imagine that some day it might actually become common to treat diabetes (regardless of weight) with this surgery.

I saw a similar story on the news recently.  I am so happy that mainstream medicine is finally looking at WLS for all of it's benefits. Denise
I have maintained for one year at this point.  I am steady at -120 pounds.  =)

I had to laugh at that piece though....If you read the stats on people who have had diabetes and had the Bypass. They have pretty much proven that it does nearly cure the diabetes....Why waste the money for the reasearch when you can talk to thousands of people who can testify that it worked for them! My curiosity is more in whether or not the sleve has the same results on diabetes as the bypass.....That is what I am praying for!

I am 9 weeks out from my sleeve.  I've been a type 2 Diabetic for about 6 years and it was unmanageble before my surgery.  Mine has not totally gone away (yet is what I'm hoping, I heard sometimes it can take up to 6 months), but I'm totally off my meds.  My fasting sugars stay between 85 and 105 and my one hours after eating stay from 95-130.  The highest one I've had at all after my surgery was 147 and that was after eating barbeque w/ half a bun.  I'm sure there was a ton of sugar in that sauce and I probably shouldn't have eaten it.  I actually carry trail mix with me because I get a lot of lows now.  I haven't had my hemoglobin a1c done yet, but I will soon and I'll let you know how that turns out.  With my presurgery diet it was a 9, and last October it was 11.  I'm sure it'll be under 7 at least this time!  Diana

Thanks Sherry. I have had amazing results with my dieabetes since surgery.  I went to the Dr yesterday for my 3-month (July 9) checkup and my a1c is running at 5.3.  Which is awesome since right before my surgery it was at 12 and up.  I am so thankful for my new little tummy, and the wonders it has done.

Mom to Brooklyn 2 1/2 and baby Dodge here sometime in May

I'm so thrilled about all the medical advances being made! I didn't have diabetes, but I did have horribly high blood pressure that at times was medication resistant. At 3 & 1/2 weeks post of from my sleeve, I was off all of my BP medications with normal BP. I am totally thrilled! : )
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

I had an A1C of 11 plus prior to surgery.  I got it down to about 8 right before surgery and have not had any insulin or medications since my lap RNY on March 12th this year.  I was taking 140 units per day and sometimes that didn't do it.  My fasting BS is now about 85-90  each morning and my last A1C was 5.2.....IT'sAMAZING and the bad thing is the blasted insurance comapny wouldn't pay for my procedure but was more than willing to pay for the medications....does that even make sense???  Oh well, my health is better and I'm no longer diabetic.  I'll continue to monitor it and maybe get comfortable with it and not need to.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!

I know exactly what you're saying. There's a quote on my blog something to the effect of: Obesity is like a house, diabetes is a room, hypertension, sleep apnea, and so on are other rooms. They gladly treat the rooms while the roof is falling in.

I can't wait to get my "roof" repaired. It just absolutely floors me because most people (including doctors) regard WLS as cosmetic, or they think that all we have to do is diet and exercise and we wouldn't need WLS. Uggggghhhhh!!
