The "unbearable" pain lasted about half a day...then I was up and walking cause I was so bored just laying there watching tv.  I would say that the "normal" pain lasted me about a month or so.  After about 2 weeks or so of sleeping in my recliner I got up the guts (no pun intended) to go lay in bed.  The first night I kinda hurt myself and had to take a Percocet cause I twisted badly in bed.  Now that being said, I still have weird feelings in my stomach from time to time but not really what I would call pain.  I think its just the weight shifting around and causing some small discomfort, but nothing unbearable.

You WILL hurt, dont get me wrong but just take it easy and dont try to overdo anything.  Thats the main thing.  That being said, don't sit around too much cause then you will have discomfort.  Try to get up and walk as much as you can bear then come sit back down or lay down and rest for a little bit.

Have you ever had surgery before?  I've had my gallbladder removed, a tubal ligation, a hysterectomy, and the lap rny.  The hysterectomy and gallbladder were worse than the lap rny but the others were less painful.  Weight Wise uses the pain ball.  I forget what it is called.  I don't know if all the other docs use this or not but I have to say that I LOVED that pain ball.  If you get one be very, very careful not to accidentally pull it loose/out or your pain will be much more noticable.  Trust me, whatever pain you have, they have medication to help and it is SO worth it in the long run!  I am getting close to having lost 100 pounds and I would do it over again!!!

i had open rny so I was in some what more pain then if  lap...but the pain meds really helped alot. the best way to help with the pain is get up and walk and sit in your chair....the more you move the less you hurt...My incision is 14 inches long and  as I tell everyone it is my badge of honor....
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

Michelle,  if you've had open abdominal surgery before, the laproscopic RNY will be MUCH easier for you! I had laprascopic VSG and it was a piece of cake compared to my C-sections (25 & 26 years ago) and my abdominal hysterectomy (24 years ago). I think you'll do fine.

When I was in the hospital they had me rate my pain on a scale of 1 - 10 every few hours (one being none and 10 being the absolute worst). I never rated my pain over a 5 and it was usually less than that.

Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

It's called an OnCue ball - and yes only the RnY patients get it!  It is usually pulled out the morning you leave the hospital from the main incision area.  I got to play with Thomas' ball today!!  ROFLMAO  but then we slept together too!!    (get out of the gutter people!!) Me in the chair - him in a drug induced state... oh wait I LIKE my men that way!!   (love ya T!!)

I had Lap RNY.  I was never in any "real" pain to speak of.  It was more discomfort.  I had a little trouble turning over in the bed about 3 nights.  I never slept in the recliner.  My 3rd day was the worse as far as the pain goes.  I was off work a week and made it just fine.  I didn't even use the loritab when I got home because it said "do not take on an empty stomach" and it made me have a lot of nausea.  I used some tylenol.  I know everyone is different though.

This is the ride of my life.....what an amazing tool I now have!!!
