Hello my name is Michelle and I am thoroughly excited about my first appt this week.  I was just promoted to Management so my insurance finally covers WLS.  YAY!!!  I will be posting some pictures hopefully today or by the weekend and getting my tracker set up too.   I have read through many posts and you are all such an inspiration to me.  We have some brave & tough individuals on here, and I am so glad I can turn to you for advice or help during this MAJOR life event.  They have said that the plan I have with UHC approves very quickly and that I could be having my surgery by August.  I really can't wait! I do have some questions though... First is about the protein drinks.  I have a VERY hard time with thick drinks.  I don't want to sound like a baby but it's true.  I'm wondering which protein shakes you've found that taste good and possibly how you've made them, such as with juice or with ice, something like that.  I haven't even looked for a protein shake yet and really don't quite know where to begin.  Any suggestions would be great! And, is there anything specific I need to ask the Doctor when I meet with him on Friday? Also, how long before going back to work?  I am a manager for AT&T and so I do not have a physical job.  I am hoping not to be out very long.  I have been told that mine will be the Laproscopic Bypass.  I will thank all of you ahead of time for being here for me and everyone else like me, who are new, excited and scared all at the same time, you are angel's to me.

Hi, Congrats on your 1st appt with Dr. G.  You will be in good hands.   My favorite protein powder is Gladitor from Smoothie King.  It's really good and I buy the vanilla so I can make all kinds of drinks. I returned back to work on the 3rd week.  I had a desk job at the time so I was fine.  Just take it easy!   Goodluck at you're appt and write down all you're questions so you don't forget.  Dr. G will take all the time you need for questions.  I have never felt rushed during my visits.  I go in next month for my 1 years appt.  WOW, how time flys.   Carrie

Hi Michelle,  my name is Dionne.  I had rny bypass on March 31 and Dr. Gorospe did mine.  You will like him and his staff, and you will also like Bailey Medical Center.  Everyone there is very nice and good to you.  As for the protein,  I have had very bad luck with shakes.  Before surgery I was able to drink powdered shakes and the ready made kind at wal-mart.  After surgery I had a very hard time.  All of the protein drinks made me want to hurl.  There were even a few that I couldn't bare to taste and my husband had to throw it out for me.  Just recently, I have been able to drink some soy protein from wal-mart that has 20 grams per serving and when mixed with Braums skim milk gets me 33 grams.  It is not terribly thick but is a little grainy.  At least it tastes and smells okay.  Well about work, I was told that Dr. Gorospe will let you go back when you want to.  I went back to work at 2 weeks post op,  and I am on my feet and moving some at work.  I have had a co-worker take only one week off and she did alright.  I was glad that I took 2 weeks.  I was easily tired during that first 2 week time period.  I hope I helped with some of your questions.  I hope to meet you at the next support group meeting.  Let me know if you will be there.  Dionne

I never found a powder I could stand.  I drank some CytoSport drinks.  They taste like Gatorade.  You can get them in Tulsa at Discount Sports Nutrition at 61st and Memorial or online at the CytoSport website.  As for the first consult, ask anything you can think of to ask.  He will talk to you about a lot of things and even ask YOU some questions.  He is a great guy and i think the world of him.  His staff is so super sweet too.  What time is your appointment?  I might be able to stop by and meet you and answer any questions you have as well.  I am heading up that way anyways Friday to pick up my girlfriend in Skiatook (which is just up the road a bit) so I could definitely stop by.  Let me know. SIDENOTE: Dionne did your appointment with Dr Britt get rescheduled?  I have a chest x-ray, appointment with Dr Britt, and then a 3 month check-up with Dr Pond in July 8th.  After than if you and Roger want to grab some lunch let me know.  :)

Hey Dan!  I don't have an appointment with Dr. Britt.  Should I?  I do have one with Dr. Pond on July 8th.  Would love to do lunch on that day, though.  Dionne

Wow!  Just posted and already 3 responses...almost made me cry.  Thank you so much for caring and understanding, you all have been where I am now, that is what makes this site so wonderful.   OkieWolf...my appt is @ 9:30 on Friday.  It would be nice for you to stop in and say "Hello".  For me right now I look at all your pictures and think how awesome.  But I still can't believe it will happen for me.  I mean that I will actually feel better, more energy, etc...  I guess I could sum it up with...It just seems like a dream...a GREAT dream!!

I'm still pre-op with Dr. G, but I only live about 10 minutes from his office, I would be more than willing to come up and sit with you, be a wittness on your paperwork or whatever you need.  Just let me know!

Welcome to the group! I've only heard wonderful things about Dr. Gorospe so I'm sure you will do great.

My favoirte protein drink that isn't like a *shake* is SmartForme Wildberry Passion drink. It's like drinking fruit punch with no after taste and has 15 gms. of protein. Just add water and some ice cubes and you're good to go. The other flavors they offer are very good, too.

Again, welcome and best wishes to you!

Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

I get mine at OWLO and I can pick some up for you if you'd like. Or, you can order them online. You can click the blue link in my post above and it will take you to their website where you can order.  If you'd like me to pick you up some, I'd be happy to do so and bring it to you at our next get together ... or we could meet up before. Just let me know.

Oh, also, I'd be happy to give you a packet to try before you buy any if you'd like!

Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly
