I had a huge hernia removed in march that was larger than A football. I found out that the hernia is back...Wonder what the odds are on that...Its in the same spot as the last one and like the last one its growing fast....Do you think I will get a discount for this one?  This will be my 6th surgery in 6 months...before my gastric bypass I have never been cut on before I must be making up for lost time..

Is there such a thing as a hernia repair SPECIALIST?  Maybe it's time to find one!  I wonder why some people get a lot of hernias and others do not?  How do you even know you have one...do they hurt?  I feel for you.  I have been poked and prodded so many times before gastric bypass so I've had a lot of surgeries too.  I know how discouraging and costly it can be.  I'm sorry to hear your news and wish I could make it better for you...but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.  Shut up...right!  lol

You got that right about what doesnt kill ya. There is pain with the hernia...its like a knawing pain that won't got away. Its either a hernia or an alien baby...when ever I stad up you can see the bulge if I had to expel gas the "blob" really protudes out. My family physician felt it last week and said that I had another hernia. Once you had one you will know if you ever have another one.... I wonder to if there is such a thing as a hernia specialist. I think I will goggle it and see...thanks!!!

Some people have issues with tissue integrity and are prone to developing hernias. I used to see this frequently when I worked in surgery. There are different things they can do to help repair a hernia with more stabelization. I'm sure your surgeon  will probably choose to use one of those techniques since this is a recurrence. I wish you the best!

Pattye, ((((HUGS)))). I am so sorry that you have to keep going through this. Don't know really if it would matter, but maybe you should change Dr's. I know a good one, lol. Maybe for you the 6th time will be a charm. Best of luck, Rita

Pattye, Incisional hernias are not uncommon in patients that have had moderate to large abdominal incisions, are over their ideal body weight, that have had infection, have been, or are, smokers, are middle age or older, history of diabetes, and several other factors. They routinely occur in greater than 10% of patients, and recurr in about 44% once the first one has happened. They will likely use some type of mesh to help keep this from recurring. There are several repair methods and tension free techniques available. If I remember correctly, you had open RNY, correct? Or an open incision for your infection? I'm certain the technique used for your hernia repair will be different from your last repair. I wish you the very best. Don't feel like you are the only one with this happening....when I worked in surgery, sadly, this is a relatively common problem. Tissue integrity is a difficult issue to deal with no matter who the surgeon is, or technique chosen.
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly
