Heparin?
I don't know about WW, but I had Lovenox the morning of surgery, daily after surgery in the hospital and for 10 days after I got home. Boy, was I ever glad to finish those yesterday! My tummy is all colors from the injections. I was so proud to return my medical waste container to Dr. Nelson's office today that was filled with the used syringes. I hope I get to stay away from those for a good long time. ; ) I understand the safety and blood clot prevention, but I was glad when i was done. ; )
As far as I know - or remember - I got Heparin both before AND after surgery while in the hospital. it is important because they don't want us to have any clots so they try to keep the blood flowing well!

Kim,
Sorry to say - I got a shot in the left side of my belly before surgery, and in the right side later in the day after surgery. I think pretty much everybody gets them.
Here's the good news/bad news - bad - the one bruise that I got from the heparin shot is great big - maybe 4-5 inches across. Good - only one side bruised, neither side hurt (I think they must be using insulin needles or something very small like that) and the bruise that I do have is in a spot that no one will ever see unless I put on a Speedo - and that ain't happening any time ever...
All in all, the good of the heparin far outweighs the shots themselves.
John
Good Morning Kim,
I don't know if everyone has to do it. But I did. However, mine was prior to the surgery. I gave myself two shots in the tummy everyday for five days leading up to the surgery. As for pain, it wasn't too bad either. I had ultra fine needles, and would just pick a different spot to shoot myself each time. I did get a little bruising but not too bad.
My dr. wanted me to have them because several years ago I had had a stroke and he was just being extra cautious. (Note: I had my stroke when I was very young - even younger folks have them as i found out first hand!) Another reason to get our weight down into a more normal range.
Keep us posted as to how you're doing.
Huggs,
Pam
Kim - yes, you get a shot before and one after surgery. They give the shot in the abdominal area, they don't really hurt, but the actual medicine stings a little. But as John said, you are left with a big bruise. My second shot bruised more than the first one and the bruise was there for weeks. I don't think they send you home with anything, unless you have a history of blood cloths. - Anna
