Ugh

Today was my bad day. I wasn't really sore, except when I moved from sitting in the same place for a while. The worst thing about today was the nausea. I don't understand what happened. I did the same things today that I did yesterday, and I was fine yesterday. It seems like my burping has gone down today, but every time I do burp, I feel like I'm going to hurl at the same time.... Sorry, a little too much info, but I was told to give the gritty details. I've also had a headache all day long, and I'm not sure if it's from drinking sugar free drinks all day long and not drinking any straigh****er, or something else entirely. Either way it's not fun. And I miss chewing. I was told that I can't have even gum for the first two weeks, and I'm having a hard time with that.

Hang in there Michelle. I STILL have bad days at almost 2 years out even!  It comes and goes and just think you are still only a few days out of major surgery!  AND you had to do your finals too! Give yourself a little break!  If you need to medicate, do it, stay on top of the pain or nausea.  REST now if your finals are done too!  We're here for you!!

Michelle welcome to what a taste of being a post op is like. As for the gum I would say throw it away and forget about it. You really wouldnt want to be chewing it and GOD for bide you swallow it. since gun does not digest I have heard where they have to operate on WLS patients to have  it removed. YIKES! Your headaches and nausea is from going cold turkey from carbs and what you are use to drinking especially if you drink alot of caffiene based drinks. This all will pass in a few days. Good luck!

Michelle, I've never had the burping that you mentioned, or any nausea. Are you takinng a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec, Prevacid Solutabs, Nexium, etc? If not, I think one of those would help. The only nausea I had was the evening of surgery when I tried to walk without taking any pain medicine .... made me get green quick!!! But since then, it's been smooth. The  think I am finding difficult is swallowing liquids without swallowing air. If I do swallow air, it will cause a burp. I know it's backward, but it's easier for me to drink with a straw and not get air than just to drink without a straw. I hope you feel better soon!
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

Michelle, I am sorry that you had a bad day. Unfortunately you will have good days and bad days. It just comes with the process. It will get better as time goes by. When you miss chewing pull out the ole pop sickle. I know that it is not the same, but it does help. Just think you are almost a week out and then you can chew again soon. When is your diet class? Is it next Friday? Hang in there kiddo.

Yeah, I'm taking Prilosec OTC twice a day, and I'm taking the infant gas relief that they give you when you get discharged. I don't know why I got nauseated, it might have been the type of broth that I was drinking, it was a new kind and I wasn't used to the smell of it. But anyways, as soon as I posted first on here, I used my first syringe of Phenigren and just went to sleep. It seemed to help, and I slept great. Hopefully it won't happen again anytime soon, I'll just stick to chicken and beef broth thank you very much. And I think another thing was that I over did myself, yet again, with the activity. But today should be better, I have one final, then I sell my books back, then I get to come home and rest for the whole weekend. That sounds nice. Cricket, my diet class was supposed to be next friday, but I have a class that day, so it will be two weeks from now. I can't remember what the nurse told me about how long I couldn't chew gum, would you happen to know?

I was never given the information about now chewing gum.  I never asked about it either.  I found that during my two weeks after surgery that ice was my best friend.  I chewed a LOT of ice.  Some of it plain and some I poured over just a little bit of crystal light or something with flavor.  I really got sick of the sweet taste everything had in it so I did some caffeine free iced tea.  It won't last long and so worth the results!! - Debbie F
