Calling for Help from Sooners
Hello all Sooners,
I am posting on behalf my son-in-law here in Moore, OK. I had RNY in 9/2005 and have lost 167 pounds.
He has been gaining more and more weight and we(as a family) have become more and more concerned.
He now has diabetes which will soon require insulin and seems to have great difficulty losing any weight.
Could someone in the Norman area please tell us about your bariatric surgeon and why you chose the program that you did.
Thanks lots for the input,
Nancy Shirley
on behalf of Robert and Rachael Shirley
I know Moore is a little ways from Edmond, but you won't find two better surgeons than Dr. Walton and Dr. Broussard from Weight Wise. They do the rny, the lap band and the newest to the family, the sleeve. Check them out on this site and the Weighwise.com site, they are both great. Wishing you the best.

Hello from Oklahoma!!
I don't know much about OWLO in Norman, however, I can tell you about the practice that handled my RNY. You can find them at www.weightwise.com. My surgeons are Dr. Gregory Walton and Dr. Toby Broussard and they practice out of Foundation Bariatric Hospital in Edmond Oklahoma. This practice is a multi-disciplinary program that handles both surgical and non-surgical weight loss. I had RNY almost 2 years ago and have lost 175 plus pounds so far and am still losing. I credit Dr. Walton with saving my life. The surgical options they utilize are RNY, Lap-Band and Gastric Sleeve.
Please visit the website and the YouTube information that is available. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. There are several patients from WeightWise on this Oklahoma forum and we would all be willing to help! Our support groups are open to persons who are researching options as well. There is a list of groups on the website as well.
Good Luck and let us know if there are any questions we can answer for you or your son.

Hi Nancy - glad you reached out..I can vouch for everything Ruth said about Weightwise and Drs. Walton and Broussard. I had surgery not too long ago and couldn't be happier! By the way I am from California too - only been in Oklahoma for two years!!! Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. - Anna
Hi Nancy. I can share my thoughts about Dr. Nelson with OWLO (Oklahoma Weight Loss Options) and her staff. I'm just 3 days post op and she and her staff were wonderful. The program and Norman Regional Hospital are a bariatric center of excellence appointed by the ASBS , which says a lot about the surgeons, nurses, and hospital care. I was informed and well taught every step of the way. The office staff was incredible and have always been prompt to answer any questions, return any calls, or anything that I've needed. Dr. Nelson is also one of the few surgeons around that had specialty training beyond her medical residency with a full fellowship in bariatric surgery. The surgeons at OWLO are extremely safety and patient oriented. Everything is checked and double or triple checked to maximize patient safety and recovery time. The dieticians are wonderfully helpful and will answer any questions at any time that you may have ... and they are great motivators in a positive way. I am so very happy and pleased with my experience with Dr. Nelson ...she's compassionate and intelligent and caring and I have never felt rushed or pressured in any way. Erica, Dr. Nelson's PA is also fantastic. Please, if you have any questions about OWLO, I'd be happy to answer. I don't think you'd be more pleased than going with the OWLO program.
i agree with everything harris2 wrote.
My surgery is in 5 DAYS!!! YEAH!!! (i just had to share that first. i am super excited, but have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride the last few days) :)
With Dr. Keith with OWLO. I have had wonderful experiences with everyone in the office so far. The are knowledgable, friendly and approachable. I am on day 5 of my 10 day pre-op diet. i appriciated the nutritionists and the fact that you can get supplements and meal replacements right in there office. They are tasty, so far, and reasonably priced.
I have heard great things about WeightWise also, but at a Norman-ite, it has been great having everything so close to home.
My husband had his RNY last summer in Tulsa with Dr. Gorospe... his office was GREAT! I would have gone to him, but with gas prices, even the short 2 hour drive was way to far for all the appointments. When i started researching surgeons in Norman and OKC, my PCP strongly recommended OWLO.
i can let you know more about Dr Keith in about a week..... :)
Another reason I chose OWLO (other than a fantastic surgeon and program) was it was close to home and they were contracted with my insurance company. : ) Being so close to home was a big comfort and helped with travel times for appointments and testing pre-op .... and a short ride home after surgery. Additionally, hubby could run home to care for the animals and be back at the hospital in less than an hour and it was convenient for our children to come by and visit. The care at the hospital was A+ and I can't say enough wonderful things about my surgeon and her PA and office staff. I feel like they are all my friends now.
Nancy i had my rny done by Dr Ronnie Keith of Oklahoma Weight Loss Options in Norman. He is in practise with Dr. Nelson. I chose him of all the surgeons in Oklahoma because of his record and because of his program. With them you are not just a patient but a member of the family. From the seminar till you are way out as a post you have his staff and them to help you no matter what time it is. There are no questions that seem to stupid to them and their weight program is designed to help the patient and make sure they understand the process and the lifestyle changes that you will have to make. ANd they are also the only surgeons in this area that are certified as a center of excellance from Medicare. You have to be above the rest to have that recognition.
Dr keith has operated on me a total of 5 times in the past 4 months. I would not trust any other surgeon with what he has done for me. I am not saying the other surgeons are not as good as he is. But wiht him I can strongly tell you he does what IS BEST for you not what will make him the most money. If you would like more info go to www.OWLO.com thats their website.
Good luck and I pray that God will help you and your family. Pattye
