Do you wear a medical alert ID?????

I ordered a necklace from www.americanmedicalid.com . Although Dr. Walton has never said that we need too, I don't think that it is a bad idea. It just alerts the medical field that we have had gastric surgery, and for them to be extra careful placing a NG tube or artificial airway. If not done correctly it could damage the pouch. Of coarse an emergency is an emergency, right? It also makes them aware of any allergies that you may have.

I liked this website the best because you can actually build your own piece and see what it looks like on line. The engraving is also free. Here is what I had put on mine.

Gastric RNY

December 2007 NKDA                (no known drug allergies)

No Blind NG Tubes

No NSAIDS

Dr. Walton's name

Dr. Walton's phone number

My name

Oklahoma

The cost was around $76 with taxes and shipping. Just wanted to share, Rita

I ordered one off of E-bay for a lot cheaper.  Probably not as pretty but I was able to get the appropriate information on it.  Including WeightWise's phone number.  Unfortunately I was NOT wearing it the night I took the trip in the little ambulance last fall.  But mom grabbed it before we left and handed it to me at the hospital!! You should have seen them trying to convince me they could place an NG tube without a scope.  My daughter and I were both arguing with the nurse.  But he had done them before in a bariatric patient and he convinced me it would be alright and that he would measure carefully.   Have you ever had a tube stuck in your nose while you were awake?  OH MY GAWD!  Next time knock me out please!!! anyway....

I don't know specifically about tatoos after weight loss surgery, but I worked in the OR for years. What I can tell you is that tatoos change with the age of the wearer. I've seen some really pitiful pin-up girls and some very sad, droopy, and wavy anchors! ; )
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

I never had a tattoo until after my RNY.  For our one year anniversary, my surgery buddy and I both got a tattoo.  Mine is on my ankle in the front, a beautiful colorful hibiscus flower.  Afterwards, we went to Support Group and everyone got to ooo and awwww about it. With my luck, they wouldn't find the tattoo to NOT tube me until too late!!   I wore my bracelet religously for about a year and then not so much.  It did serve as a reminder for me of what I have been through and to remember to do the things I need to be successful.  That was worth it! Now I have my tattoo!!

Since I am penicillin allergic, I am supposed to, but I got tired of it. So, my daughter bought me a keychain with that alert on it. On the back, I wrote Gastric Bypass. It works for now, but thanks for the info on yours. I might do that later on because I think it's a great idea.

Rita thanks for posting this! My brother is an emt II and it greatly helps them and the er team if they know u have had any WLS. He had to insert a ng tube and if the woman had not had worn a med alert he might have destroyed her pouch. There are cheaper sites to order one from, one company will let you order the id and the bracelet part is optional. It comes out cheaper if you make your own bracelet. As far as the tatoos I remember what my Dad said. IN youth they are cool and when you get older they sag and lose the gusto of why you did it. I wanted to have an angel on my neck but thought seriously about it and decided not to. Who wants to see a winkly angel on a neck of someone inthe 80's....

I have not had my RNY done yet but...I have a medical ID bracelet from http://www.mylifewear.com/womensmedicalIDAlertBracelets.htm .  I love it, but it was kind of expensive (about $70 plus shipping)!  But on the website it says that you can order just the id part if you alreay have a bracelet from their site.    I really like mine and I wear it everyday.
