Akins store

I went over to the Akins at Penn & Memorial today because I thought I might think about what I want to have post surgery wise.  Plus a nice lady at the support group named Carol said she eats Ezekiel bread and it has lots of protein.  So I picked some up.  But other than that, it was totally confusing.  Wow but they have a lot of stuff in there.  The protein was very confusing because there is so much to pick from.  I just know that I'll be on some kind of liquid diet with lots or protein so I'm trying to see what tastes ok and what is terrible.  The stuff at WW tastes gritty and I don't like it.  Does anybody have any advice on how to navigate all this stuff?  I could go broke trying to test it all!  I bought 1 IsoPure and some Muscle Milk.  Thanks for any input you might have!  Kim

I love Akins.

If you buy muscle milk, you will want to buy the muscle milk lite-it's pretty high calorie otherwise.

I keep unflavored soy protein and egg white protien around for "savory dishes" like soup.  I just LIKE soup, so if I want soup I dump in some protein and call it a meal.....

I really like the Isopure but again, I mix it half strength because full strengh thas 40 grams in one serving.  I'm banded, and I don't know if it's that or what, but if I chug 40 grams of protein I am pretty sure I'll get to spend some time in the john an hour or so later....my gut doesn't do well with that much.

I also keep vanilla protein around and Davinci flavored syrups and light soy milk so I can have whatever flavor suits me.

I've tried Chike-it's ok.

I've tried new directions, and for times you don't have a blender, it's great.

Isopure also makes puddings which are pretty good too.....but honestly, by the time you get to mushies you'll want to put the unflavored stuff in some mash taterss or beans and salt the heck out of it!

I thought soup was a no-no because it's like mixing solids and liquids or drinking with a meal?  Or did your doctor tell you differently?  Or maybe you just meant during the liquid phase? Thanks for your post!

Kim, It is basically all trial and error. What you may like now you may not like after surgery. I'm still trying to navigate four months out. My best advice would be not to let it all become overwhelming. I don't know if you have had your post op diet class yet. I would certainly hold off on buying alot of things for after surgery until you go through that.  I bought a bunch of stuff before hand and now I can't use it because it has too much sugar in it. This was stuff that I bought from weight wise. I had the RNY though and the best I remember you are having the sleeve. There are tons of places online that you can order 1 serving of protein samples. I would encourage you to do that as oppossed to buying a whole big container. It is so hard to judge how those are going to suit your taste. My favorite that I have found is the UNJURY brand in Vanilla and Chocolate. I mix it with soy milk and sometimes add some peanit butter or the sugar free syrups and ground flax seed.  I also like the health food store on I-240 and Penn better than Akins. The Whey Protein is the best source of protein. It also taste better if you mix it with the Magic Bullet or Blender. When you just shake it up it tends to be gritty. If there is anything I can do, let me know, Rita

Rita - I hope I haven't asked you this.  Why did you choose RNY instead of VSG?  Did you have a sweet tooth. FYI - I'm planning my surgery the day that you're working!  LOL!

Kim, When I decided to have surgery we weren't doing the sleeve as of yet. However, I still chose the RNY because I just felt like it was the best choice for me. Oh, yes I am a sweet eater. Well actually I love all food. I just felt that the RNY would work the best for me. I also asked Dr. Walton if he was going to do surgery on one of his loved ones , which one would he choose. He will tell you that the RNY is the cadillac of WLS. However, they all work if you use the tool  you are given correctly. It's just a matter of personal decision.  My theory was that I only wanted to do this surgery one time so I better pick the one that I thought would work the best for me. I typically work Thus, Fri, and Saturdays. This week it is Mon, Fri and Sat. Come up sometime and I will give you a tour of the hospital if you haven't allready had one, Rita

Becareful NOT to get too stocked up prior to surgery because your taste buds will change after surgery.
Personally - I like the Atkins Shakes that you can buy at Walmart and the SLIM-FAST LOW CARB shakes that are also at Walmart. The Slim Fast shakes gave me diarrhea after surgery so I had to wait for a few months before trying them again and now I can tolerate them. The IsoPure is like drinking chalk flavored water - I liked it before surgery, but NOT now !! grrrrrrr
GOOD LUCK !!
  • Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose.  Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email.  I'll answer it as soon as possible.

Oh!  I hadn't thought of that.  I guess my tastes might change and I might hate anything I like now.  Thanks for reminding me of that - I had totally forgotten!
