Saying Hi

Hi everyone, I am new to this message board and wanted to introduce myself.  I have been considering WLS surgery for several months, but recently decided on the lap band.  I am attending a seminar in a couple weeks with Dr. Gorospe in Tulsa .  Do you have any advice for me?   My primary care physician thinks the lap band might be a good choice for me.  She doesn't support the RNY procedure.  This helped me make my decision.  I like that the weight loss is faster with other methods but was concerned about the side effects.  Does the slower weight loss with the lap band help with excess skin? I was diagnosed with diabetes today , so I have some added incentive.  For now I have to give myself shots twice a day.  I hope losing weight will change this.   I am interested in any input you could give me about the doctor, the cost, etc. . . I am self pay, because my work has an exclusion clause.

Welcome! Losing weight will definitely help with your diabetes. I don't have a Lap-Band, but many here do. I'm sure they can answer your questions. I'm scheduled for VSG (a relatively new WLS) in just a couple of weeks. You might check out that option, too, if you haven't already. Again welcome, and I hope you're having a wonderful week!
Blessings and Best Wishes! Shelly

Welcome to the boards.  I am one of Dr. Gorospe's patients ( I am just 2 weeks out as of yesterday).  I think the world of Dr.Gorospe and Dr.Kirk.  Their support group is absolutely awesome, and the support group meeting is this coming Monday the 14th at 6:30 pm at Bailey Medical.  You should come see it, you will love it.  The hospital is totally state of the art with all of the newest best equipment available.  And the entire hospital caters to bariatrics from inflatable beds in the room (easier to get in and out of) to larger chairs in the lobby, everything is to make us more comfortable.  Also, this coming April 30th we are having our monthly Tulsa area get together at 6:30 at Olive Garden at 71st and Memorial.  It would be a great opportunity for you to meet other bariatric patients, both pre and post op, and hear stories and ask all the questions you would like.  Would love to have you attend.  If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.  This site and these folks on here are a Godsend.  I don't know what I would do without them. Once again welcome and cant wait to see you on the losers bench! Dan

Hey there, welcome to the boards.  I too am a RNY patient of Dr G's.  Before setting your mind for sure make sure you really look at all the options and make a decision for yourself. Many drs are against many different things but it doesnt mean its bad for you.  Its just a matter of thought for them.  Good luck to you on your journey.  You will find many friends and lots of support here.

I am also a patient of Dr. Gorospe and I agree he is truly amazing.  I am 6 weeks out today and feel it was the best decision I have ever made. Everyone is correct about researching all your options.  When I first began my journey I was leaning towards the lap band procedure but after attending the seminar, conducting my own research, and then talking with Dr. Gorospe I realized that the choice for me was RNY. Leave your mind open to all of the options and make the choice based on what will enable you to be successful.  Welcome to the boards and I hope to see you at a meeting.
