Another CPAP question

I have the Respironics RemStar Pro (M Series) machine with the ResMed Ultra Mirage full face mask.  My mask covers both my nose and my mouth. My humidifier goes from 0 to 5.  They told me to keep it on 2, but I knew within the first night that I needed it higher.  So, I kept it on 3 for a long time and now I've bumped it up to 4 with the dry winter air...  Last night I had it on 5, but took it off at about 3:30 am because my nose was running :o( I have a question now...  What kind of water do you use in your machine?  I was pretty sure that they used tap water when I had my test done at the sleep center.  But, the lady who set me up with my machine told me to use distilled water.  I have used bottled water (Ozarka) in it a couple of times when I traveled to my sisters... I don't want to mess anything up, but I hate having a jug of distilled water in my bedroom too.  Especially if I'm going somewhere.

Dot, I have a Respironics machine - not sure of the model - and the nasal pillows.  I know for sure that when I got fitted for it they told me very specifically to use distilled water only.   Having said that - when I have been travelling with the damned thing I have used bottled water instead because it was all I could find.  I have another trip scheduled for later this month, and expect to do that same thing then. I couldn't really tell any difference, but I guess over time the minerals from bottled water or tap water would probably build up inside the machine.  Unless you're lucky enough to be going on extended travel, I don't really see how bottled drinking water would be a problem for a few days at a time. As for the humidifier, my dial goes from 0 to 8 and they told me to keep it at 2 or 3.  I thought I had died in the Mojave desert the first night I slept with that thing on 3.  My tongue was stuck to my bottom teeth all the way around my mouth.  I couldn't swallow, talk, or even really move it until I swished some water around.  I have mine set at 7 now, although I do expect it to start coming down now that spring humidity is upon us and the heater is off... Hope yours is working out well for you now.  I can tell I feel better after 90+ days with mine, and my mother seems to think the dark circles under my eyes are starting to fade somewhat. Have a great day! John

I uses distilled water and changed it daily. Plus I cleaned my machine and vents daily...kinda complusive about it but I never got a cold or had the sniffles while using it...
being healthy has its rewards....take the challenge and just do it

I quit using the water on my RemStar completely.  Sleep like a baby all night.  I found no matter what the humidity was set on I couldn't sleep and had the drippy nose...gross!!!  I have lost enough now that I can get rid of the machine!  Hoooorraayy!!!!  Soon we will all hopefully be rid of the dang things!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Respironics BiPap Auto M Series and they told me distilled only as well.  I havent messed with the humidity dial but i might try turning it up and see if it helps.

I am pretty sure the only reason they tell you to use distilled water is becasue of the build up in minerals. When I first got mine i used tap water and after a week I could already see the white minerals so I switched to distilled and it is just not a corrosive.

My husband uses distilled water in his every night. I didn't need the water. Also, I am proud tosay, I chucked that CPAP, and it's now my husband's spare to leave at his parents house so that we don't forget his.
