So anxious to get a surgery date....!

I had the last of my appointments on Monday and thought I was closing in on that magical surgery date.  But, alas, I was told that they don't give out surgery dates until they are ready and you have completed everything they want.  I was told on 3/14 at my initial consultation that the dr wanted me to lose 29 pounds!  Yikes!  Isn't that why I'm having surgery!?  Anyway, I have lost 11 pounds so far so I'm doing good.  I was thinking I would get to schedule a surgery date, do liquids for maybe a couple of weeks and be ready to go.  But no!  They said I had to wait 30 days for my next appointment.  I'm the kind of gal that thinks a lot but when I make a decision I'm ready to go.  Let's get a date on the books and go for it! Ok, I feel better!  Helps to get rid of some frustration with you gals!

I know exactly what you mean when you say once you make a decision you want to get going.  I'm that way myself.  Just stay positive and before you know it - you will have your surgery date.  Keep the heat on the drs. office so you don't get "lost in the shuffle" as way to often happens. Best of luck!  Keep us posted. Pam

I remember thinking the same thing.... If I could lose 30 pounds in 3 months (my insurance required supervised diet time frame) I wouldn't need the surgery....but then I thought about all the times I had lost weight.  I had lost 50-60 pounds 3 different times in my life but never kept it off...  I never lost it that fast either. But, I was determined thatit was the time in my life to take care of me.  I was one of the most surprised people when I lost the 30 pounds in 3 months!!!  It's all about shrinking your liver so there is plenty of room in there for the surgery to be done lap.  It's SO worth it! HANG IN THERE!!!

Glittergal:  Everything in its time sista!   There are good reasons for going through a process.  Especially this process.  I am a patient of Dr. Walton as well as many others here.  I think every one will tell you, it is WORTH the wait.  On top of everything, you have probably seen how busy things are at WeightWise!!   Dr W & B are sticklers for making sure that all the tests are completed appropriately, all of the i's are dotted, the t's are crossed.  The initial weight loss is very very important because of the liver and shrinking it.  It definitely makes any abdominal surgery easier for the doctors.  Think of it this way - you actually have only 18 lbs left until you can schedule!!  That is AWESOME! The thing/s you need to focus on are losing your weight, getting your head ready for the changes in your life, solidifying your decision to have this life changing experience and enjoying the fact that SOON you will be on the journey of a lifetime! Hang in there and you will have your date very soon and be on the losers bench!  Come to support group too!  It helps!  It really really does!! R

I was asked to lose 60 lbs pre-op, by Dr. Broussard! This was based on the fact that I am rather short and my BMI was 69!!! They wanted my BMI at 60 or so. It took me a little over 5 months. When I first heard about this I was in dispair, I had no problem getting on a program to lose this weight, I just questioned whether I could lose that much. In the last few years, all I managed to lose on commercial diets was 15 lbs or so! But I did it, and even though I dreaded the thought, I was determined. Today, six weeks after surgery, I am so greateful for the pre-op weight loss, because it set me on the right path and I have been able to handle the post-op life changing committment a lot better than otherwise. I know it's tough to do the pre-op diet, especially when we have failed at so many attempts in the past, but, you CAN do it. Be determined, it is definitely worth it, and think of your weight loss journey as starting now, not after surgery.  Best of luck to you!!!  Anna

Thank you so much for your post!  I have kind of "recovered" from the disappointmet of not getting to set a surgery date on Monday.  And I am very determined too.  I can wait and I think you are so right about setting myself on the right path before surgery.  I gave up diet  Coke and I was a major addict.  I tried to drink one earlier in the week and it tasted really bad.  Weird, bad!  I'm so happy about that. Did you do RNY or VSG and why did you pick the one you did? Thanks again!  Kim

Kim; I picked VSG because it seemed less invasive. Also, because, my main problem with food was the quantity, and not so much the quality. I am not a big fan of sweets, and I have no problem staying away from junk food or greasy foods. All I wanted was a procedure that restricted the amount of food I would eat. The sleeve does just that. I am loving this...I am hardly every hungry, the only time of day that I do get hungry and I enjoy food is around 11:00 a.m. - other than that , eating is more of something I need to remind myself to do, than anything else. I also lost interest in a lot of foods. Right now I am going through a stage where I simply don't care abut food, I don't know if this will change in the long run, but for now, I am not complaning!!!  I haven't had carbonated drinks since late August...never missed them. You will do great!!  Anna.....
