i might have the oppritunity to travel to Japan this summer on a teacher exchange.  It will be two months post op.  Any one know of any requirements or restrictions that would make that impossible. It is a once in a life time chance....but i don't want to get my hopes up if it is too much too soon.... Any suggestions or friendly advice.  (i have not had a chance to call the Doctor yet...) nicole

The only thing I have heard about flying is the you have to drink way more water when you fly because of the pressurized cabin, at least that's what my dietician said.

I really think that will depend on your condition post-op and what Dr. Keith decides to approve. It sounds great, but if you had any late complications, you'd sure be a long way from home. Best wishes that everything works out!    Shelly

I think that as long as everything has been going okay for you prior to lift off you should be okay. You want to be sure and get up and stretch your legs every hour or so. Clear it with your Dr. first though. best of Luck to you. That's exciting!

That is a GREAT opportunity.  Your doctor will tell you what's best.  I would advise a medical ID bracelet (sp?), just to let them know you had the bypass.  You're going to have a blast!!!  I lived in Japan for 2 years..........LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah... i forgot you had lived there!  I am super excitied, but trying not to get my hopes up to high.  I will find out for sure this week if i am accepted.  i love the idea of the medical bracelet.  I plan on calling the doc this week to double check everything.

I was banded, but I flew 2 days after surgery, and then again about 6 weeks later.  On a long flight, I'd drink extra water to keep the kidneys flushed, and that will insure that you are walking around a bit (to the toilet).  I'm so excited for you-what a great year this is going to be.
