for those that have had RNY can you eat garlic? what about other spices? on the liquid diet before and after can you add garlic or onion to your broth?   my mom makes a garlic and onion chicken broth broth that at first I thought oh gross but its actually pretty good. she puts a skinless breast in  the crockpot (small pot) with a chopped clove of garlic and a large chopped onion fills crock pot with water and cooks all day...  she will store it in the fridge or sometimes freezes it. my kids like when she uses the broth to cook rice in and puts the chicken and etc on the top.. i have to agree its pretty good.. i salt mine.. a habit i am going to have to break!

I don't know if I am typical.  I guess we will see when everyone posts a repLy.  I used to eat jalepenos and hot sauce like crazy.  I can't do that anymore.  I can't handle Carribean Jerk sauce or spice anymore either.  I used to LOVE cooking chicken with Carribean Jerk seasoning but it kills my grouchy pouchy!!!  I use garlic powder.  I could never do garlic before because it has always made me feel ill.  If I use too much garlic powder I will get that awful queasy feeling...like morning sickness.  Every time I take my vitamins I get the queasy tummy too. I hope this doesn't discourage you.  My husband hasn't had the same reaction so it may just be me.  That broth sounds great!  Post op it will be WONDERFUL!!!  One thing my dietician Chris told me about was to mix cottage cheese and hot sauce...I mix ON THE BORDER (mild now) with cottage cheese and it is my substitute for mexican food.  It satisfies the craving.  It's good on top of some lettuce or a taco salad.   GOOD LUCK!

Load me up on the spices! I put Pace on everything since surgery. I"ve always eaten spicy food, so I was happy to know that I still can. Chili powder, garlic, etc. I don't know about jalapenos as I have been afraid to try those on anything yet. Ro-Tel tomatoes in my Mexican food recipes still work and taste great. That's the weird thing..I used to hate tomatoes, and now I want them in everything.

I love garlic and other spices.  Don't use that much hot sauce anymore, only because I can't drink water when I am eating.   My faves are garlic, onion and cilantro.........more flavor the better.

I have never been one that could eat  HOT foods. But I have not had any problems with other spices like onions and garlic.

okay you guys know i am the complication queen at weightwise!!  i have not been able to stomach the smell of garlic since my first egd procedure where they found my stricture and first ulcer.  any sign of garlic and i am practically on the floor.  my family loves that frozen garlic bread at wal-mart.  TWICE this week i come home and the house reaks with it!  oy ve!!!  they are killing me!! i was never a hot and spicy eater before surgery but with the repetitive ulcers i stay completely away from most hot and spicy foods.   i know...borrrrrrrring!!  but i have such a picky and grouchy pouchy that i pretty much lock into foods that i can handle and don't stray too far off that path.   i'm a cheap date!!  you can pass that on by the way!!  haha...oh wait, most of us are cheap dates anyway!!  teehee!!! r

Sherrie, Spicy foods haven't bothered me at all post surgery. I wouldn't add the onion or garlic to your liquids post-op. We have had patients that have come back in for various things after their surgery . One of them wanted French onion soup from Panera. Our Nut said that was fine ,but we needed to strain the onions out of it. I would probably say at about 5-6 weeks after surgery you could add the onions and garlic. I would say the same holds true for pre-op also. That's why it is classified as a liquid diet. Ask your Dr. ot Nut though , because they may have a different opinion. I love me some Garlic, Y_U_M_M_O....

Sherrie I eat the hotst spicy foods imaginable and it has not bothered me at all. While on the liquid stage I would make a tomato soup with unflavored unjury protein powder and loaded it down with spices...Everyday i have to have something hot and spicy... the hotter the better.
