insurance and medical loan

Well, after a year, I finally got my date, Mar. 31!  But because my insurance, through the hospital I work at and will have the surgery at and lists WLS at a special service, has a $10,000 lifetime limit on bariatric surgery, I have to come up with about $9000.  Plus, they only allow employees 1 year to pay their bill.  I don't know anyone who could afford those kind of payments!  I tried to get a medical loan, but have been turned down twice.  I guess because I don't have any collateral.  I make a good salary and have little debt.  Anyone have any other suggestions?  I don't want to ask my mom to co-sign.  Sorry for venting, but I figure you all would understand.

Did you try going through CareCredit to get your loan? We used them once for veterinary surgery on one of our horses and had a very good experience. If our insurance, for some reason, should fail us, that's my current back up plan. Their website is HERE.  There's also National City that was another recommendation that we have heard, but I have no experience with them. Their website is HERE. I hope it works out for you soon.   Shelly

Do you have a 401k you could borrow against?  My husband and I just did a debt consolidation and borrowed against 401k.  The payments are reasonable, come out of his paycheck automatically (PRE-tax), the interest is low...  and besides that, the interest is actually paid into our 401k (so the interest is OURS)... Just a thought...  If you own your house, you could also do a home equity??

I do have a 401K through Saint Francis.  Did you have to pay a penalty?  How long do you have to pay it back?  That may be my last resort.

We have 5 years to pay it back and no penalties.

Dot, that's a great idea!

Another thing I should have mentioned though...  You can only borrow up to 50% of your vested amount...  So, if you are only 50% vested, then you would only be able to borrow 25% of the total amount of your 401k... In our case, we were 100% vested, so we could borrow 50% of his 401k.

Dot has a great idea. I would sure try it. It would be worth it. Working at the hospital do you not get any kind of discount. At our hospital we get a discount then for the remainder of my expense they take it out of my paycheck at 17.50 a paycheck.. I would look and see if there is any type of discount or payroll deduction.
