Yikes! I have protein and keytones in my urine
I went to the doc yesterday to make sure my UTI was gone. It was but he said they found keytones and protein in my urine. He was going to send my urine sample off for more testing to see what is going on. He tested my sugars with a finger stick and it was 83 which was perfect. What's going on? I had RNY to avoid becoming a diabetic and now it "might" be possiable? I found my oldest sister dead in her house 8 years ago. She died from her diabeties. I just wanted to hit the floor crying when my doctor said I had keytones. I knew what that meant. I should know the results tomorrow. I don't go into wor****il 2:00 so I hope to here something by then. I am very worried and I know it could also be nothing too.

Don't freak out yet. Our high protein diets can cause this also. See below in red:
A positive test may indicate:
- Metabolic abnormalities, including uncontrolled diabetes or glycogen storage disease
- Abnormal nutritional conditions, including starvation, fasting, anorexia, high protein or low carbohydrate diets
- Vomiting frequently over a long period of time, including hyperemesis gravidarum (a severe form of morning sickness)
- Disorders of increased metabolism, including hyperthyroidism, fever, acute or severe illness, burns, pregnancy, lactation (nursing a baby),or post-surgical condition
Good thoughts going up for you Carebear. I was in Ketosis on the pre-op diet, so it has to be common. NUT said that it's common for some doctors to think that Ketosis is dangerous..there was a handout on that somewhere..I've got it at home, but won't be there until after 4 today. Please keep us posted on how you're doing!
I think finding ketones in your urine is absolutely normal. In fact when I was doing Atkins, I bought the ph strips to put in your urine stream to detect ketones (which is recommended in the Atkins book). This was the only way to know if your body was in a state of ketosis as a result of the low carb/high protein diet. The darker the color of the strip the more ketones you had which meant you were burning fat! So, it sounds like you're doing the right thing. As far as the sugar, I believe anything below 100 is normal, so an 83 sounds good to me. I doubt you would be diabetic.
