Finally enough courage.....
Hello my name is Heather and I am from El Reno. I have been reading alot of topics but never have had enough courge to ask any questions. Well I went to my seminar last Wed. and am waiting on the office to call. I have a couple of questions. First has anyone had a child after having weight loss surgery or know someone that has? Also is there anyone that has Dr. Keith. He was the doctor that gave the seminar and he seemed like he was up front with everything but I just don't know alot about him and neither does my primary care physicion. So if anyone has any info. I would appreciate. Thanks for your time
Heather
Welcome to the boards and congrats on your decision for WLS....
I have a friend who had the surgery 4 years ago and it wasnt the laproscopic like it is now. She had the old fashin cut her open. She got pregnant 5 months after her surgery. They recommend you wait a year to 18 months but she had a very healthy pregnancy and baby was perfect. She looks great and has kept the weight off.
Welcome to the Oklahoma board! Don't be bashful about asking questions. We all learn from each others questions and the only dumb question is the question NOT Asked!!
I'm sorry I don't know anything about Dr. Keith, but I know there are people around here somewhere who have used him. Hopefully they'll pop in and tell you what you need to know. Here is a link where you can find out some info about him and read other patient reviews:

As for the pregnancy question, my sister had open RNY on 01/22/03. Prior to WLS, she had fertility problems (due to weight and pcos) and never had regularly scheduled periods.
Having surgery made her start her period. I think she said she started by the day she was released from the hospital. Anyway, fast forward to the end of April of 2003, she still hadn't had a period since the one in the hospital. She didn't really think much of it though because she was never regular to begin with. I don't know what prompted her, but by the middle of May, I guess she was curious so she took a home pregnancy test and it was positive!
I don't think her and her husband were using any precaution at all because she had fertility problems for years, didn't think it would happen easy for them, etc...
Anyway, she had her son on December 26, 2003, 11 short months out from having open RNY. He weighed 6 lbs something and was and still is completely healthy!
I don't know for a fact, but I would suspect that her weight loss was slowed down by the pregnancy, but she still continued to lose weight during the pregnancy.
After the baby was born, she breastfed him and through the year and a half of breastfeeding (it seemed like she nursed for ever to me) she ended up losing TOO MUCH weight (you know they say breastfeeding helps you lose)...
After she stopped nursing, she gained a few pounds back and has been maintaining a healthy weight since! So, as long as you get in your protein, calcium, vitamins, water, etc in and be upfront with your O.B. doctor about the fact that you have had WLS, I don't think there are many risks.
Hope to hear from you soon!

(still pre-op too)
Welcome to the boards. I am only 20 and was going to ask the same question about surgery as well. But please dont get pregnant before 18 months if you can help it. My surgeon was very persistant about me getting on birth control right after my surgery.
I have PCOS as well. Im thrilled to hear that will go away....
Ask any question you have no matter how embarrasing! We love all questions!
See you around!
I dont know much as of yet. Dr. Keith is my surgeon as well. I have done all of the pre-ops that my insurance required. They have a laundry list of things you have to do BEFORE you can even so much as look at the surgeon! So I did a 6mo diet, saw the Psych, the Nut, and provided a 5yr weight history. I go see Dr. Keith TOMORROW!! I will let you know what I find out!
