Fruit and protein drinks
Do you add fruit to your protein drinks? I do and I hope it's not to much sugar but they taste so good with frozen fruit.
I use 1/2 banana and a few frozen strawberries with vanilla powder. Someone else mentioned adding cherries to chocolate powder and that sounds good too. I really have not found a chocolate powder that I like.
Is there other options to getting the protein I would be needing other than drinking nasty nasty nasty shakes. Sorry I just cannot stand anything that requires adding a vanilla or chocolate powder to water and mixing it up. I cant even stand hot chocolate most of the time. Just curious cause if I have to drink the protein shakes I will do it but I will damn sure not enjoy it.
You will need to drink the protein drinks for at least 4 weeks after surgery. 2 weeks clear liquids and protein drinks and then when you advance to soft foods on weeks 3 and 4, still need the drinks to get your required protein. As of week 5, if you can manage to get in the required protein with regular foods, you could stop. I really only started to manage all my protein with foods the last couple of weeks. Before that probably still had at least one a day if the protein grams did add up. Of course, I mixed mine with only 4 oz of water or milk (can't always tolerate milk right now) so I could get it down easier.
I really like the Champions Banana Scream (Discount Sports Nuitrition). And the chocolate Walmart brand was not bad. I still occasionally mix it will small amount of water to add to my decaf coffee with a packet of splenda. Nice in this cold weather.
You'll survive, just have to make up your mind to it.
Okie, do you like beans, nuts, and tofu? I haven't tried any of the recipes that eggface has on her blog, but some of them sound pretty darn tasty! She has recipes for regular high protein meals as well as ways to "doctor" up the shakes to make them taste better.
I got a pdf file compiled by someone on the RNY board last week (she was handing it out free, so I took it!) and I can print it off and bring it tomorrow and let you see some of the recipes in that.
Woo HOO!! Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day! I get to see my surgeon for the first time and meet lots of new friends too! Can't wait! This is great!
Carebear, I don't think there is a problem with adding fruit as long as you can tolerate it... It isn't like you are adding straight sugar.
For me, the ONLY way to go is to add frozen fruit. I started out taking water + protein powder + ice then I found out it = too much to drink!!! By adding the ice to make it well, ...icy - It made more volume and harder to drink. I now add frozen fruit (from schwan's) to my milk and vanilla protein shake and it makes it icy and yummy!! Another thing I do is put it in a "go cup" because with that lid on there you don't smell that weird protein shake smell and it keeps it icy....
Yeah I am definitely going to have to do some serious experimenting to see what I can stand. Being lactose intolerant makes most of those drinks just downright impossible for me to drink cause they taste so aweful. As for tofu, by belief is God didn't not intend for man to eat that stuff. I have thought about getting some stuff from GNC or Discount Sports and trying the different ones to see what tastes decent.

Okie-try spirullena-it's made with soy protein-BE CAREFUL, they also make a whey based one too. They have lots of good flavors, and many stores sell inidividual packages rather than making you buy the whole can.
It's a little lower on the protein scale but by the time you add soy milk or goat milk, you are back up to 20 plus grams.
I usually use non flavored soy protein or jay robb egg protien with juice, soy milk or goat milk. Lactose intolerance does make it a little harder-but there are options out there.
I found a goat milk powder protien at the health food store yesterday in the non-dairy section-but that sucker was 43 dollars for the can, so I passed.
