Hey Wolf-I think the best way is cold turkey and lots lots lots of water-it helps flush out the system and makes the symptoms pass quickly.

I quit it cold turkey too. I only drink bottled water with flavored Crystal Light now as I can't stand my tapwater anymore...seems like since the surgery, my tastebuds and nose (sense of smell) are different. I've also made the switch to caffeine free iced tea. Single bachelor, make some sun tea before you go to work. If that doesn't work, grab bottled water and Crystal Light tea. Believe me, post surgery I wanted to try a diet Sprite to see what it would be like. The taste is bad (I used to love it), and it burned my esophagus like you wouldn't believe.

Yeah, the headaches are awful, but they passed for me at the end of the first week. My taste buds definitely changed after surgery. If you don' t like Crystal Light, try the Propel packets..they aren't as strong. There's a lot of stuff on the post-op drinking list that I hate. Sometimes, I get a craving for a full octane regular Coke! but it passes..and with my tastebuds, I know it wouldn't taste good. Good luck.  I know it's hard, but it's definitely worth it. Wishing you much good luck.

Giving up pop was something I wasn't sure I could handle.   I had a headache for the first day but no more after that. I slowed down the pop then just picked a day to be the last day. I haven't looked back since.  I used to drink a 44oz Sonic pop during my workday and then come home and drink another 44oz at home! You can do it! If I can anyone can!!!! I also like the green teas they are good hot or cold. Arizona Iced Tea has a gallon jug of diet tea that I love. Good luck Diana

Just start weaning yourself off of the pop and caffeine.  I was a big Pepsi fan, so I started buying the 2 liters of caffeine free Pepsi.  It really tastes the same, and was better for me.  I then began adding other things like water and the flavoring sticks to them, and it helped.  I had my RNY over a year ago, and I haven't drank pop since about 8 weeks prior to my surgery.  You can do it.  Just get your calendar out and plan the day when you will go off of caffeine, then plan the day when you will stop drinking pop altogether.  It will help if you start to drink the other things now, then drink less soda each day until you get to your goal day to quit!  Good luck to you! :) Staci

Try switching to a kind you do not like. I went off soda for 4 years I just went cold turkey. Then I went back to it I quit again when I had surgery, it is not easy I wish you luck. Tressa

You ladies rock, seriously.  Thanks so much for the ideas.  I just marked the first day of cold turkey.  I went to Wal-mart and bought 2 of the 24 pack Dasani waters and several of those Propel flavor packs.  I have drank 6 bottles of water today and flavored 3 of them.  Only one small headache that quickly went away.   I guess my brain tasted a flavor and was tricked into thinking it was a pop hehe.   Yeah I am craving a Dr Pepper right now but I just opened another Dasani instead.  Here's to hoping tomorrow is as easy as today was.  Mind over matter!!

Keep up the good work Wolf, and don't turn back. Just tell yourself after you have surgery you can't have it and be done with it. Thankfully that is one thing I haven't had a problem with. Good Luck.....
