Ok, so what exactly do i need to keep away from? I am getting the RNY and really am ready for it all except the diet. Like, how much sugar i can have, how much carbs, how much calories? Or is there not really a limit? The only thing that i do know is that i have to have at least 50g of protein a day. Help?! Thanks

I can only tell you what was recommended to me by my surgeon:

Pre-Surgery:  Recommended at least 64-80 grams of protein, low carb and low sugar 12 days prior to surgery with the last 4 days of that being clear liquids (shrinking your liver)  Clear liquids consisted of broths, SF jello, SF popsicles, SF Koolaid, Crystal Light (no caffine) and protein drinks mixed with water or non-fat skim milk.

Post-Surgery: Stay on the clear liquid diet for 2 weeks and then progress to next stage which would be soft foods for 2 more weeks, then next stage is to advance to solid foods for maintenance.  Stressed trying only one new food at a time to see if you tolerate it.  His dietician actually provided us with a pamphlet called the Surgical Weight Loss Owner's Manual.

No caffine for month following surgery, so you may want to cut back now to avoid that caffine withdrawal headache.

All surgeons will have their own instructions for their patients, so best to get info directly from them or nutritionist or dietician they work with.

Best of Luck, Phyllis

Just make sure you ask tons of questions and get definite answers from Dr. Gornichec's nutritionist.  That's the one thing that I wish I would have done.  Of course, your info will be a little different from the band because we can have the sugar and not dump. Also, Betty Naismith is a great source of information.  She is always at the support groups as she is the support group coordinator for Dr. Gornichec. Looking forward to hearing more about your journey! tonja

Thanks. you guys are soooo helpful. I know everyone was told something different just trying to get a general guideline. Im leaving for the sleep center in about 30 mintues to just have a talk witht he doc for some weird reason. The sleep study is tomorrow night. I have to put in 20 buck to get there and back as i drive a jeep cherokee. Love it but hate gas! Keep posting for "Diet Tips" as i will start to call them.

Wishing you sweet dreams for your sleep study, as weird as that sounds.  Just do your best to relax and pretend your at home.  If you can't tolerate the mask should they use it, ask if they have a diff style or ask if you can try it on before hand so it is less confusing if they wake you to put it on.
