Sleep study

I had my sleep study last night. I failed it miserably. They were putting me on the machine and I had a panic attack and couldn't breath. I never could go back to sleep. I feel like such a failure.  I'm so worried that I won't be able to have the surgery now. I never had an attack like this before. I've had surgery and never had a problem. I just feel like I've let myself and everyone down. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Oh don't feel like a failure, my dh had to have a sleep study and did the same thing but on the second try he did fine, did your dr. give you anything to help you fall asleep?  If not maybe that would help.

Sleep aids are a good idea.  Don't worry about your panic attack.  You aren't a failure!! BUT, I"d get an rx from my PCP or whoever ordered the test because at the sleep center I went to, the tech wasn't allowed to administer any medications.  EVEN the ones I broght with me.  He did hand me my bag that had the meds in it and some water, but I had to get it out of the bag, open the bottle, and take it myself.

I would say you really can't fail a sleep study, it they came in to put the mask on you, it means they saw the signs of sleep apnea and wanted to get the pressure settings for the sleep apnea machine that would prevent apnea while you were sleeping.  They will probably have you come back, and when they do, you might ask if they have a couple different masks for you to try on.  Also, a sleep aid prescribed by your phys is a good idea because you are not in your comfortable home setting no matter how nice and quiet they try to make their rooms.  I am the odd ball, I can sleep anywhere.........must be from all those 12 hour shifts in the Air Force and napping while the napping was good.

I've never had a sleep study, but I don't see how I could sleep if I knew someone was watching me.

The pulmonologist gave me a prescription for two Ambien pills because I have trouble falling asleep in a strange bed---heck I have trouble falling asleep in my own bed.  I took one Ambien and fell right to sleep.  Hope your second study goes much smoother.

Here I go again. The Doctor's office just called at 11:00 pm. And said I needed to go do the study again. I don't have sleep apnea but my oxygen dropped pretty low. She said that they would give me something this time to help me sleep. And that I could take my time getting use to the mask. That should help. They will call Monday with an appointment. Thanks everyone you have helped me feel a lot better about myself.  I think I can do it this time.

I personally could not use the mask , so i traded mine in for the "nose pillows "  it just sits inside your nose and doesnt touch your face , you might check and see if they offer something like that , i know i have heard people who are very clostrophobic(sp) have trouble with the mask .  I use mine every night and it has made a big difference for me , but it does take getting used to.  Hang in there !! I too have a mild case of sleep apnea.  I also use the nose pillows because I'm and side and stomach sleeper and the mask kept slipping to the side.  Try to get the nose pillows if possible.  Once you get use to them then it will help you feel better the next day with more energy.  Good luck on your WLS journey.
