Hospital Diet

Well I was in the hospital overnight earlier this week. Everything turned out fine. For some reason I was having chest pains was a little dehydrated and had a bug. I figure that the dehydration was partially due to the bug, my throat was soooo sore hard to drink and hard to eat. Well anyhow while in the hospital they sent the dietition in to ask about my "diet" I explained the best I could or so I thought. So for breakfast they sent me French toast with syrup, Orange slices, and plain oatmeal with about 3 pkgs of sugar to coat it with and a side of orange juice. Hmmmm do dietitions not get trained on bariatric patients. No our hospital does not do bariatric surgery, But there are going to be more and more of us as time goes on. I figure next time I will have them pull the diet up on the internet.  Tressa

It's really pathetic.  I know that when I was in Baylor for foot surgery, they piled on the fatty meats and carbs.  A lot of the patients are older and NEED calories, but I'm not and I don't and no one needs a big pile of bacon and eggs for breakfast, plus biscuit, plus oatmeal.

It angers me that the dietitian don't get it with bariatrics.  AND, usually they are super skinny and have never had a weight problem in their life - so that's a double whammy. Come on hospitals and doctors - let's educate these people!

Get this... I was in the hospital for over a week. This hospital had a bariatric wing but the beds were all full. Now I'm in the hospital for dehydration and mal nutrition right... Day one: I got a regular food tray, of which I could eat none of it.  I told the nurse that I needed a bariatric tray (kitchen should know what this is since they have a Bwing right??wrong) I got a second tray that I could not eat.  Day two: Ditto of day one but I talked to different people that day, got same results.  Day three: I complain big time to my surgeon!!! He sends his PA down to me and we work up a list of foods I can eat (hello like CIB with protein powder).... do they bring me that ??? heck no. I call and complain and complain..... HOURS later (like four or five) I get a powder packet of CIB an empty coffee cup (small one) a packet of protein powder and a cartin of milk........ no way to mix this all together except in this little coffee cup.... I tried, it didn't work.... I cried - a LOT!!!!  My friends smuggled me up some food so I had something, it was pathetic!!!!!  My entire stay went that way. Every meal was a tray I couldn't eat!!! But I'm sure I got billed for each and every one of them!!

Been there done that!  I was in the hospital a few weeks ago for a GI Bleed - mind you the Gastro doc put me on a full liquid diet.  I was bleeding - so I had to remind them not to send red jello - and then I find out there is no SUGAR FREE anything!  I hear this happens alot in several of the city hospitals!  Anyway, so I sent my dear daughter to Wally World to get me sugar free jello and a sugar free juice.  I spent 4.5 days like that - they would send ice cream, lots of regular jello, coffee with SUGAR packets, yada yada yada.  The 2nd day the nurse said that diet would be coming to see me since I was sending back my tray uneaten - I explained to everyone I came in contact with my dietary needs and still no one was listening.  SO I said - send them - but they never came.  By the end of the 4.5 days I was soooooo protein deprived I was about to scream!  When the Gastro doc finally showed up my blood pressure was sky high because I was so upset and HUNGRY for protein!  He decided that I could be discharged and gave me a regular tray - roast beef - trust me I ate about a 1/4 cup and was happy.  Doesn't take much!!!  I pounded protein for almost two solid weeks to get my energy level back up.  I lost 17 lbs in 7 days due to this.  It was nice to jump start my weight loss but GEEZ!!   Sometimes even when you explain and explain they still don't hear you!  I am waiting for a survey so I can lay into them.  If I could have gone to the hospital that did my RNY it would have been great - but this was an emergency - ambulance and all.  I wouldn't even call 911 until I called my bariatric group.  They also needed to do an NG tube to see if I had blood in my pouch - it took them 15 minutes of convincing both my daughter and I that this particular nurse and done one on a bariatric patient before I would let them - he was very careful and measured carefully - and yes I had blood in my pouch - hence the above.  Anyway - we just have to remember to keep reminding people about our needs and our bodies reconstruction so that we don't get hurt further by their "help"!! My rant is over.....haha
