Thursday...Negligence...

I took Harlie and Taylen for shots yesterday.  Harlie was to receive her HPV shot and a flu shot.  Taylen was receiving her flu shot.   I took the girls back to the room.  The nurse was asking about Harlie's HPV shots and that she was showing in the chart that Harlie had her first shot in June of 2007 - but the 2nd shot she had in August 2007 wasn't showing up on there.  I told her that indeed Harlie had received a 2nd shot in August 2007 and that this was her 3rd shot.  It was my understanding that Harlie was to receive 3 shots at two months apart each.  I never received a pamphlet or other documentation on these shots.   This morning my husband received a call from the main nurse who is girls doctors nurse.  She said there had been a mistake and Harlie wasn't suppose to have received her HPV shot - it had been too early and that it was up to me if I wanted to get her another shot in December and it would be no cost to us.  I told her about the discrepancy in the chart and she said that she documents all the shots in the computer and the nurse that gave the shot was not allowed to access that information, and if it had been her giving the shot, it would not have happened because she would have been able to see the info on the computer.    I asked about the consequences of Harlie receiving the shot early and she said that their office has no documentation or information to give me on that because the shot has not been out long enough. *** As a parent, this makes me so absolutely furious!!!  With the shot being so new - nobody knows what the end consequences will be.  I pray that there won't be any.  I ask you to please pray that all is well and there won't be any bad consequences. I'm going to go pull my hair out now! Tonja

Good grief, Tonja...I'm so horribly sorry this has happened.  How tragic that they wouldn't have any records or information of overdosing or potential problems surrounding an early shot. I'll keep Harlie and your family in my prayers. Cathy

To me, it sounds pretty stupid that they would have the records unavailable to someone who could give shots.  How stupid is that?  Wouldn't you think that EVERYONE who gives shots should have access to the records before they start injecting young girls with vaccines?!!! UGH!!  I hope everything goes well.  I don't think there will be a problem other than having to get her another shot :o( I understand those are pretty painful :o(

Well, I did call an attorney from our church just to make sure I was doing like I should.  I know that all I can really do is document it and pray that nothing becomes of it.  He agreed with me.  He said it was negligence on their part - but at this time, all is well.  We'll pray that it will stay that way. I am so sorry that happened to her. I would think that with her having them to close together that they would want to monitor her closely so that if there is a problem they can catch it early. but then I dont know if i would trust them with my child again. My daughter works at a clinic I will see if she can find any info on it for you. she is good at doing research and asking questions.. I will let you know as soon as she finds something out.

I know one thing for sure - I won't be taking my daughters back there!  I have no trust for them. So, anyone know a good pediatrician in the Edmond/North OKC area? T

Tonja, to ease your mind, I am sure the vaccine is a killed virus and the time frame is to give the body a chance to manufacture immunity.  That said, it's still very disturbing because there are shots and then there are SHOTS.  I think HIPPA laws have gotten to the point where they are stopping the necessary flow of information.  However, the fact that you brought up the additional shot is disturbing to me-the "shooter" should have checked if there was any difference between what a parent is saying and the records.  For pity sakes, it's not like you were having your nails done-this is something a reasonable person would be aware of.

Tonja, not know which office you were using, I would suggest either Dr. Mickey Crittenden or Dr. Kelly Stephens at the Mercy Clinic on East Memorial there in Edmond.  I work with Dr. Crittenden's daughter and my grand daughter goes to Dr. Stephens.  I hope it wasn't this clinic.

I was using the Santa Fe office (close to home).  I liked the convenience but now I realize that doesn't mean anything!  And, my insurance is getting ready to change - so I might just want to wait to see if they have anyone different on the list (of course, I am and will remain PPO). I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers.  You all are my awesome friends and it feels awesome to know I can call you my friends! Tonja
